CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volkswagen Beetle
overall

Summary
With 254 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,909.00, 29.9% of 2018 Volkswagen Beetles for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
52.0% of 2018 Beetle models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle stands out as a farewell model with a clear sense of purpose: Volkswagen gave the iconic compact a new engine for its final bow. That engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit, and Volkswagen used the Beetle as one of the promotional platforms for it. The result is a Beetle that leans into nostalgia while still offering a bit more economy for its last lap.
Volkswagen also gave the car a special “Coast” edition, which adds a unique trim treatment and paint job. That helps the 2018 Beetle feel more distinctive than a simple runout model, especially for buyers drawn to its retro styling and personality. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for the convertible version, the fun driving experience, and the car’s stylish design and functionality. At the same time, some owners noted drawbacks such as the lack of satellite radio and limited trunk space.

This convertible model was easy on the eyes. The interior was beautifully designed, great looking dashboard. The convertible top was a great design, great quality but the trunk space was greatly diminished. If you like convertibles, the price was amazing! I need the trunk space so I passed.

2018 Volkswagen Beetle Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2018 Volkswagen Beetle prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,058 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,779.38 |
| Year-Round High | $19,981.40 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,916 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.75% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 264 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
If you find a listing below $17,779.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?
Yes — the 4.71/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.83/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Beetle’s fun driving experience, stylish design, and functionality. The overview also points to its convertible appeal and distinctive personality, which helps explain why it resonates with buyers looking for something more characterful than a typical compact car.
With a 27.3% good-or-great-deals share, you still have a reasonable chance of finding attractive pricing in the market.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a car that feels fun, stylish, and functional, while also suggesting that many buyers have been happy enough with the Beetle to recommend it. The expert commentary also emphasizes that the new engine adds economy for its final lap, which supports the case for a car that can be pleasant to live with over time.
Volkswagen’s extended 6-year warranty adds some ownership reassurance, but used buyers should still focus on maintenance history and overall condition to reduce long-term risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?
At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the car has any accident history or inconsistent service records. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you expect. Because this model year includes both value-oriented and more heavily optioned versions, it’s worth confirming that the features you want are actually present.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S trim is the most basic setup, with standard LED running lights, heated mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, a 5-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Style & Comfort Package adds larger 17-inch wheels, body-color exterior trim, keyless ignition and entry, auto headlights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated front seats with leatherette, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, and VW Car-Net App-Connect with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- Powertrain: The Beetle uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. It is tuned more for smooth, on-demand power and better economy than outright speed, and it is paired with a 6-speed automatic.
- Safety package: The SE adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and VW Car-Net Security and Service. The Dune deletes blind-spot monitoring, so that’s an important trim-level gap to watch for.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 5-inch touchscreen, while the Style & Comfort Package upgrades you to a 6.3-inch touchscreen with HD and satellite radio plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The SE Premium package adds navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The new engine adds 2 mpg in city driving, and the Beetle returned 29 mpg combined during testing.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Beetle trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, Coast, Dune, and Style & Comfort Package.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S is the value play, but it lacks the richer convenience and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Coast stands out as the best-balanced choice, pairing the Style & Comfort Package content with a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, special upholstery, and unique exterior and interior touches.
- Premium/top trim: The SE Premium package brings the most upscale feel with parking sensors, bi-xenon headlights, LED taillights, a Fender stereo, and navigation.
- Off-road trim: The Dune looks distinctive and adds ground clearance and a wider stance, but it also deletes blind-spot monitoring and the top touchscreen with navigation, which makes it a less practical pick for everyday use.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available on the SE and Coast, but not on the Dune.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Beetle?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 264 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,779.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
The current average of $19,058 sits slightly above last year's $18,916.
That kind of pricing stability suggests the Beetle has held its value reasonably well for a niche model. For a future seller, that can be a positive sign: a car with steady demand and limited supply often avoids sharp price drops. The Beetle’s distinctive styling and strong owner satisfaction can help keep interest alive when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Beetle safe?
earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Beetle’s safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert on the SE and Coast, while the Dune deletes that feature. The convertible also lacks current test results specifically for that body style, so you should be especially careful to verify the exact version you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary highlights the Beetle’s farewell-model appeal, its new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, and the special Coast edition.
The bottom line: If you want the Beetle’s final-year character, updated engine, and a market that still offers some fair-value opportunities, the 2018 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on well-kept examples near the low end of the range and be selective about accident history and equipment content.
