Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise the Atlas for its spacious interior, family-friendly layout, ample cargo space, and easy-to-use tech like Apple CarPlay. That lines up with the Atlas’s core mission as a roomy three-row SUV for buyers who want comfort and utility over flash.

With its practical packaging and straightforward family-hauling focus, it makes the most sense if you want a big crossover that prioritizes space and everyday usability. 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, family-friendly SUV that many owners feel good about living with over time. The Atlas is also described as a vehicle you can count on for spaciousness and practical daily use, even if some drivers note concerns about acceleration and interior materials.

Volkswagen’s extended, transferrable bumper-to-bumper warranty adds some ownership reassurance, and the expert review also points to solid build quality as a positive sign. Still, used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance history and how the vehicle has aged, especially if you plan to keep it for the long haul.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on body condition, interior condition, and whether the vehicle’s features and driver-assistance systems work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim starts with the basics, while the SEL Premium adds major upgrades such as 20-inch wheels, real leather upholstery, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrumentation, embedded navigation, a 12-speaker Fender audio system, self-steering parking assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with front and rear parking sensors. The SEL Premium also gets heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, ambient cabin lighting, automatic high-beam headlights, LED taillights, and folding side mirrors with puddle lights.
• Powertrain: The Atlas offers a 235-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 276-horsepower V6, both paired with an 8-speed automatic. The V6 is the only engine available on SEL Premium variants, and 4Motion AWD is available with the V6.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera. Depending on trim, you can also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
• Infotainment: The SEL Premium’s Discover Media system includes embedded navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, HD Radio, satellite radio, and Car-Net apps and services. It also uses a responsive touchscreen and includes a 12-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review notes an observed 18.2 mpg on a test loop and 17.3 mpg over a week and 650 miles of driving, and it also cites an EPA estimate of 19 mpg in combined driving for the SEL Premium.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Atlas trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE with Technology Package, and SEL.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point if you want the Atlas’s core space and utility at the lowest price. It gives you the basic three-row family-SUV formula, but you’ll miss out on many of the convenience and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
• SE: This is the trim to consider if you want a better balance of equipment and value without jumping all the way to the top. It adds more comfort and convenience than the S while staying more approachable than the premium trims.
• SE with Technology Package: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful tech and convenience upgrades without pushing you into the most expensive version. If you want a smarter daily driver, this is the trim to focus on first.
• SEL: This trim is the step up if you want more upscale features and a richer equipment list, including the stronger tech and comfort content that makes the Atlas feel more premium.
• SEL Premium: This is the fully loaded version, with the most desirable features, including the 360-degree camera, parking assist, premium audio, leather, and the most complete comfort and convenience package. It is the right pick if you want the most luxurious Atlas experience and are willing to pay for it.

Safety content notes that some driver-assistance features are trim-dependent, and the base Atlas S misses some of the more advanced camera and warning-system coverage.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,503 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.83% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,041, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas's resale value?

The current average of $14,086 sits slightly below last year's $15,797.

That decline suggests the Atlas has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a softer pricing environment than they would have a year ago. If you buy now, you may benefit from that lower entry point, but you should also expect resale gains to be limited unless the vehicle is especially clean and well maintained.

Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time, especially for a family SUV with broad practical appeal. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera, and higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

One caveat from the expert review is that the lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist system felt intrusive enough to be switched off during testing. That makes it worth checking how the driver-assistance systems feel to you on a test drive, especially if you plan to use them regularly.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.83% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 Atlas stands out as a roomy, practical three-row SUV with strong family appeal and a useful mix of space, tech, and comfort.

The bottom line: If you want the Atlas’s roomy cabin and practical family-first layout at a lower used price, the 2018 is a sensible place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a clean, well-kept example and prioritize the trims that add the features you’ll actually use most.
