Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, ample cargo space, and family-friendly features, and they also like the easy-to-use tech such as Apple CarPlay. The Atlas’s overview fits that feedback: it is positioned as a big, practical family-size crossover SUV built for everyday usefulness and road-trip duty. Even with some comments about weaker acceleration and interior material quality, the overall appeal is clear if you want comfort, space, and straightforward usability.

The market also shows healthy interest, with 34.9% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, family-friendly SUV that many owners feel good about living with over time, especially because of its spacious cabin and easy-to-use features. The expert review also frames the Atlas as a vehicle Volkswagen is using to rebuild trust, and it highlights the brand’s extended, transferrable bumper-to-bumper warranty as a confidence booster. That said, the same review notes historically mixed dependability perceptions and some ownership-cost concerns, so you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition on a used example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

At 68.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, worn interior materials, and any evidence that the vehicle has been used hard or poorly maintained. Because this model is aimed at family duty, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is more likely to deliver the space-and-comfort value you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim starts with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, while the SEL Premium adds 20-inch wheels, real leather upholstery, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrumentation, embedded navigation, a 12-speaker Fender audio system, self-steering parking assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with front and rear parking sensors. The SEL Premium also gets heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, ambient cabin lighting, automatic high-beam headlights, LED taillights, and folding side mirrors with puddle lights.
• Powertrain: The Atlas is offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6 making 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Both use an 8-speed automatic, and the V6 is available with front-wheel drive or AWD.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera. Depending on trim, you can also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
• Infotainment: The Discover Media system on the SEL Premium includes embedded navigation, Car-Net Guide & Inform services, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the EPA estimated 19 mpg in combined driving for the SEL Premium, while observed results were 18.2 mpg on a test loop and 17.3 mpg over a week and 650 miles.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Atlas trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it makes the Atlas’s core strengths available without the higher-priced extras. It suits you if you want the room, family-friendly layout, and practical SUV character at the lowest starting point.
• SE: This trim adds equipment beyond the base model while staying focused on everyday usefulness. It is the one to consider if you want a better balance of features and value without jumping to the top end.
• SEL: This is the trim to target if you want a more upscale feel and more available equipment without going all the way to the most expensive version. It should appeal to you if you want a stronger mix of comfort and convenience.
• SEL Premium: This is the most fully equipped Atlas, with the biggest feature jump in the lineup, including the premium audio system, navigation, surround-view camera, parking assistance, and the most comfort features. It is the right pick if you want the most luxurious and easiest-to-live-with version.

The safety content also notes that some driver-assistance features are trim dependent, so you should verify exactly which systems are included on the specific vehicle you are considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and still find a decent deal.

• Deal availability: 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,500 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.90% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,044, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas's resale value?

The current average of $14,047 sits slightly below last year's $15,945.

That price movement suggests the Atlas has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a seller, the current market means you may not see the same pricing power that existed a year ago, so condition and equipment will matter more when it is time to list the vehicle. A clean, well-maintained Atlas with strong features should still attract family buyers who value space and practicality.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera, and higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The review also notes that the lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist system can feel intrusive, and the blind-spot warning lights are somewhat dim.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights the Atlas as a practical, spacious family-size crossover with strong everyday usefulness and road-trip appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the Atlas’s space-first family utility and you find a clean example with the right equipment, the 2018 is a sensible buy. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market closely and prioritize condition, because the best-value examples will be the ones that combine a lower asking price with a clean history and the features you actually want.
