Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?

The expert review also emphasizes the Atlas’s practical interior, capable driving dynamics, and solid build quality, which supports the impression that it is a vehicle you can count on for regular use.

Volkswagen also backs the Atlas with a fully transferrable, 6-year/72,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk. For used buyers, the main long-term concern is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and has not developed the kinds of issues that can show up in a large, heavily used family SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the Atlas has seen family-duty mileage or has been repaired after a collision. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and whether the vehicle’s features work as expected, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on its practicality and equipment.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim starts with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, while the SEL Premium adds a V6, 4Motion all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels, real leather upholstery, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrumentation, embedded navigation, a 12-speaker Fender audio system, self-steering parking assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera with front and rear parking sensors. The SEL Premium is also the only Atlas with heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, ambient cabin lighting, automatic high-beam headlights, LED taillights, and folding side mirrors with puddle lights.
• Powertrain: The Atlas is offered with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6-liter V6, both paired with an 8-speed automatic. The V6 is the only engine described as standard on SEL Premium variants, and the 4Motion AWD system can decouple the rear axle to help improve fuel economy.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera. Depending on trim, the Atlas can also add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The base Atlas S does not get the multiple-view reversing camera.
• Infotainment: The SEL Premium gets the Discover Media system with embedded navigation and Car-Net Guide & Inform services, plus Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review cites 19 mpg in combined driving for the SEL Premium, with observed results of 18.2 mpg on a test loop and 17.3 mpg over a week and 650 miles.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Atlas trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE with Technology Package, and SEL.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basic Atlas formula with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Atlas and care most about space and practicality.
• SE: This trim is the next step up and is the better fit if you want a more balanced mix of equipment and value without jumping all the way to the top. It is the trim to watch if you want the strongest overall value in the lineup.
• SE with Technology Package: Choose this if you want more convenience and tech than the SE without going to the most expensive version. It is the middle-ground choice for shoppers who want a richer feature set.
• SEL: This trim adds more upscale equipment and is the gateway to the V6 and available AWD setup described in the review. It suits you if you want a more premium-feeling Atlas without going all the way to the SEL Premium.

The safety content notes that the reversing camera offers multiple viewing angles in all but the base Atlas S, so that trim is the one with the clearest feature gap to keep in mind.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Atlas?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right one.

• Deal availability: 38.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,474 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,133, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas's resale value?

The current average of $14,136 sits slightly below last year's $16,178.

That decline suggests the Atlas has moved into a more buyer-friendly pricing zone, which can be good news if you are shopping now but less ideal if you are planning to sell soon. If you own one, the softer market means you may need to price competitively to attract attention. On the other hand, the Atlas’s practical appeal and family-friendly reputation should still help it draw interest from shoppers who need space and usability.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic post-collision braking and a reversing camera, and higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed forward and reversing automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. The review also notes that the lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist system can feel intrusive to the steering, so that is a feature you may want to test carefully on a drive.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 38.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights the Atlas as a muscular, practical three-row crossover with standout space and family usefulness.

The bottom line: If you want a roomy, practical family SUV and you like the 2018 Atlas’s value proposition, this year is worth serious consideration. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to focus on the best-equipped listings that fall near the low end of the market range, since that is where the strongest opportunity appears.
