CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Toyota Tacoma

Summary
With 196 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,944, 45.4% of 2018 Toyota Tacoma listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Toyota Tacoma 4.62 / 5 stars.
91.3% of 2018 Toyota Tacoma listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a midsize truck that blends strong off-road ability with a reputation for durability and high resale value. It is still small enough to suit buyers who do not need a full-size pickup, yet it remains versatile for daily use and for adding racks, lift kits, storage, and other gear. That combination of capability and practicality is a big part of its appeal, especially for shoppers who want a truck that can handle active lifestyles without feeling oversized.
For 2018, the Tacoma’s third-generation lineup includes the Access Cab and Double Cab body styles, with five-foot and six-foot beds available. It comes standard with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine making 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while the available 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The truck also offers a six-speed automatic, and for this model year the manual transmission is limited to the six-speed with the V6 on 4x4 and Off-Road trim levels. Toyota Safety Sense is standard for 2018, bringing forward-collision warning, forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and more, which helps make this Tacoma one of the more safety-equipped pickups of its era.
The 2018 Tacoma is not perfect, though. The base engine is described as painfully underpowered, and the crew cab is cramped even by small-truck standards. It is also expensive relative to comparable pickups, which can make it a tougher value proposition despite its strong reliability record. Still, for buyers who prioritize long-term dependability, off-road capability, and a well-equipped safety package, the 2018 Tacoma remains a distinctive and appealing choice.

This was a great option for an affordable family vehicle. We loved that it was ready for camping. The price was right, it was just too far away.

Love the tacoma. Roomy but still mid-sized for economy and hauling smaller items. Love the body style, looks, and dependability!!

Great small truck. Limited tow capability until the TRD sport. Expensive but hopefully long lived.

The car has met my expectations. This is my second Tacoma LTD and it is a very nice truck. It is good value. The truck could use power seats which are available in Tacomas after 2018.

Yes — the 2018 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.62/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, good fuel economy, smooth ride, and cargo space, while also noting its practical appeal for daily use and active lifestyles. The Tacoma’s blend of off-road ability and versatility makes it a strong fit if you want a midsize truck that can handle work, weekend gear, and everyday driving. With 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you may find worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, dependable ownership, and a truck you can count on over time. That matters if you plan to keep your used truck for years, because a strong reputation for trouble-free ownership can reduce the risk of unexpected headaches. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Tacoma’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not abused.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Toyota Tacoma?
At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if the truck has had multiple owners or a price that looks unusually attractive. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and overall wear that could point to harder use. Because this model is often bought for active driving and utility, you should pay close attention to how well the truck has been maintained and whether its condition matches the seller’s description.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best listings.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,324 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,841, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $27,157 sits slightly below last year's $28,066.
That price movement suggests the Tacoma has softened a bit in the near term, which can help you buy with less pressure than a year ago. Even so, the model’s reputation and steady demand should help support future value better than many rivals. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you may be in a stronger position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $29,097, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $27,157 average.
- It feels more straightforward and personality-driven, with a more loyal following.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2018 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If you are willing to pay more for the next model year’s slightly different character, the 2019 is worth a look; otherwise, the 2018 is the better pick for price-sensitive buyers who still want Tacoma appeal.
