CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Canyon

Summary
With 58 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,798, 32.8% of 2018 GMC Canyon listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Canyon stands out as a midsize pickup that leans more upscale than many of its rivals. In the second-generation lineup, GMC had already given the Canyon a more luxurious identity, and by 2018 it offered a broad range of trims and body styles, from a basic work-oriented setup to more refined versions. That mix of utility and comfort is part of its appeal: it is smaller and easier to maneuver than a full-size truck, yet still offers the kind of capability many buyers want from a pickup.
For 2018, the Canyon’s available equipment made it especially versatile. The SLE trim brought an eight-inch touchscreen, a smarter interior with fewer hard plastics, a wifi hotspot, OnStar telematics, and Siri Eyes Free control for iPhones. The top SLT added automatic climate control, leather seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated front seats. Buyers looking for more rugged use could also choose the All-Terrain package, which added all-terrain tires, an off-road-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, and front recovery hooks. The Denali trim added a more luxurious feel with 20-inch chrome wheels, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the Driver Alert package, a Bose premium audio system, and a wireless charging pad.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Canyon’s fuel economy was respectable rather than class-leading, and the more off-road-focused versions gave up some performance and road agility. Crash testing was also mixed, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration giving the Canyon four stars overall and for frontal protection, five stars for side impacts, and three stars in rollover tests. Even so, for shoppers who want a compact pickup with a more premium personality, the 2018 GMC Canyon offers a distinctive blend of refinement, capability, and everyday usability.

While not having a lot to compare it to, it appears so far to be a strong running engine (2.8 Duramax) . The seating seams hard in contrast to my last truck (2500 HD ) , both being Denali versions with leather seats . The fuel mileage is outstanding averaging low to mid 30s . The electronics package is full of creature comforts including heated and cooled seats . Overall a nice ride.

Is the 2018 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also highlights a strong running engine and a generally comfortable, dependable feel, which are encouraging signs if you want a truck you can count on. At the same time, some owners mention transmission issues, so a careful test drive and service-history review matter before you commit.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a truck that has been maintained inconsistently, so condition and records should carry real weight in your decision.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
At 67.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear, then make sure the truck drives cleanly and shifts as expected. Because some owners have raised transmission concerns, a thorough road test is especially important.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 689 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,212, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $21,471 sits slightly below last year's $23,076.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more efficiently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to sell soon. If you keep the truck in strong condition and maintain it well, you can help protect its value against further softening. Demand should remain supported by the Canyon’s upscale feel and broad appeal among midsize pickup shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,158, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $21,471 average.
- It emphasizes serious towing and hauling strength in a smaller package.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2018 is the stronger primary choice because it combines a softer price trend with solid owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If your top priority is saving money upfront, the 2017 is the better secondary path, especially if you value its work-ready capability and can live with a more basic feel.
