CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 367 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,729.00, 32.7% of 2018 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Tesla Model S 4.48 / 5 stars.
80.9% of 2018 Model S models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Tesla Model S stands out as one of the defining electric cars of its era because it combined long-range capability, advanced technology, and strong performance in a luxury sedan package. By 2018, the range had been simplified to standard all-wheel drive and two battery pack options: 75- and 100-kWh. That same year also brought quieter improvements such as faster screen processing and better navigation, reinforcing the Model S’s reputation as a software-driven car that kept evolving without a traditional annual redesign cycle.
What made the 2018 Model S especially appealing was how much of its original innovation still felt relevant. The car’s large touchscreen, minimalist interior, generous interior space, and fast-charging capability helped establish the Model S as a benchmark for modern EVs. It also offered Autopilot, and the 2018 model year still included the limited free supercharging policy, which added to its appeal for buyers who wanted a high-tech electric sedan with real-world usability.
At the same time, the 2018 Model S was not without drawbacks. The buying guide notes that Tesla’s build quality has been a recurring concern, and the car does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Even so, for shoppers drawn to impressive range, sports car-style acceleration, and a distinctly futuristic driving experience, the 2018 Tesla Model S remained a compelling used EV choice.

Excited about this car. It feels so futuristic and super luxurious. Hard to know what you’re missing if you’ve never experienced it firsthand… but I know now. It’s smooth, calm, and simple. The car is extremely powerful and so utilitarian. Very nice looking and intuitive too. Can’t say enough good things about it. People may say bad stuff about Tesla, but that’s probably all coming from the outside and not people who actually own these cars.

This is a fantastic car, once you drive a Tesla Model S, you dont want to drive anything else. It is powerful, comfortable and beautiful. You can trust this car even with a high mileage. You have to test drive to make sure there no issue with suspension but the rest is nothing to worry about. Its a reliable car very impressive

Acceleration in the performance version is something all sports car enthusiasts will appreciate and love, build quality unfortunately is not so spectacular. If not for the insane speed, I would have given it 2 of 5 stars.
2018 Tesla Model S Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2018 Tesla Model S prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2018 Tesla Model S cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,658 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,590.15 |
| Year-Round High | $24,109.62 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,408 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.07% |
Prices are up 1.07% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 376 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the market.
If you find a listing below $21,590.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Tesla Model S a good car?
Generally — 4.48/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and it lines up with the way shoppers describe the car’s appeal. Drivers consistently praise its exceptional performance, impressive acceleration, and innovative features like Autopilot and smart air suspension.
The overview also points to the Model S’s long-range capability, advanced technology, and luxury sedan packaging, which makes it especially appealing if you want a high-tech EV with real-world usability. Its spacious interior and minimalist cabin add to the case if you value comfort and a modern driving experience.
With 30.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.48/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to a car that feels innovative and smartly equipped, with owners highlighting features they enjoy over time such as Autopilot and smart air suspension. At the same time, the feedback mentions concerns about build quality, which is worth keeping in mind when you evaluate used examples.
For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk is less about the powertrain story in the data and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent condition and documentation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still prioritize a full history report and confirm that the car’s condition matches the listing description. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you want to catch signs of prior damage, uneven wear, or cosmetic issues that could affect ownership satisfaction.
Focus on overall condition, not just mileage or features, because the market data suggests many examples are clean but not all will be equally well maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient and compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 376 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.07% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 82.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,590.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $23,658 sits slightly above last year's $23,408.
That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well, which is a positive sign if you plan to resell later. A stable price trend can help support future value, especially when demand remains steady for a model with strong performance and a premium reputation.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.48/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.07% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.48/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a used Model S with strong owner satisfaction, a high-tech feel, and a market that still shows meaningful deal opportunities, the 2018 is a sensible primary target. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of price, condition, and clean history.
