Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, strong safety features, and ample cargo space. The Outback’s practical, capable character also fits well if you want a vehicle that can handle a wide range of driving situations without feeling flashy or overcomplicated.

That mix of usefulness and versatility is a big part of its appeal, especially if you value substance over excess. 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still attractive opportunities in the market.

Is the 2018 Subaru Outback reliable?

The owner feedback points to a vehicle people tend to trust for everyday use, with repeated praise for its smooth ride, strong safety features, and ample cargo space. The review summary also suggests many drivers feel good about the Outback’s overall durability and dependability, which is exactly what you want to see in a used family vehicle.

The expert evaluation reinforces that dependable, practical character by describing the Outback as a cost-effective solution with strong all-weather usefulness and comfort for long drives. It also notes that Subaru frequently offers discounts or low-rate financing, which can help lower ownership costs if you buy at the right time.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle has been maintained well, since a practical crossover like this is most valuable when its safety and utility systems stay in good working order.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Subaru Outback?

At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the vehicle’s safety and convenience features operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model starts at a lower price and includes standard all-wheel drive and a CVT, but the Premium trim is the best-value choice because it adds more equipment and can be paired with the EyeSight package. Higher trims add more comfort and luxury, while the Limited and Touring versions bring additional refinement.
• Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder makes 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.6-liter 6-cylinder makes 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The 6-cylinder is the stronger choice if you want more passing power and easier acceleration.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the key driver-assistance suite, and it adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability plus lane-keeping assist. It is available on every Outback except the base trim.
• Infotainment: Starlink is available with an 8-inch display, faster start-up and response times, better voice recognition, new on-screen applications, and over-the-air software updates.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5i is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, while the 3.6R is expected to get 22 mpg. In testing, the 2.5i returned 21.9 mpg.

Which 2018 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2018 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: base model, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5i Touring, 3.6R Limited, 3.6R Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base model: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price, standard all-wheel drive, and the core Outback formula. It makes sense if you care most about value and can live without the extra convenience and safety equipment found higher up the range.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds more everyday comfort and is the recommended starting point for most shoppers. If you want the smartest balance of price and equipment, this is the one to target.
• 2.5i Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and more features without stepping all the way to the top of the range. It suits you if comfort matters more than keeping the budget as low as possible.
• 2.5i Touring: This is the most fully equipped 2.5i trim, so it makes sense if you want the most comfort and convenience features in the four-cylinder lineup.
• 3.6R Limited: This is the minimum trim you need if you want the 6-cylinder engine. It is the right pick if you want stronger power and are willing to pay more for it.
• 3.6R Touring: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the 6-cylinder engine plus the most upscale equipment available in the lineup.

EyeSight is available on every Outback except the base trim, so that safety-package gap is worth factoring into your decision.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Outback?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,491 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.47% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,801, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $15,806 sits slightly below last year's $16,900.

That price movement suggests the Outback has softened enough to give used buyers some leverage, but it also means future sellers should expect a market that rewards clean condition and strong documentation. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good shape, you may be better positioned than someone who pays too close to the top of the range.

The model’s practical reputation and broad appeal help support demand, especially among shoppers who want safety, space, and all-weather usefulness. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2018 Subaru Outback earns five-star ratings across the board from the federal government, except for rollover resistance, which rates four stars due to the Outback’s raised suspension. It also earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The EyeSight suite is the key safety technology package, and it is available on every Outback except the base trim. It includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keeping assist, along with other collision-avoidance functions powered by a dual-camera system behind the windshield.

That said, the base trim’s lack of EyeSight is an important gap if safety tech is a priority. The rollover result is also worth noting if you want the strongest possible crash-test profile.

Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.47% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 model year brings updated styling, a quieter cabin, improved Starlink performance, and a strong safety package.

The bottom line: If you want a used Outback with strong safety, broad usefulness, and a market that still offers some negotiating room, the 2018 is a solid choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years to see whether a lower-priced example gives you the equipment you want without stretching your budget.
