Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4.76 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
Mercedes-Benz positions the 2018 E-Class as an expensive but highly rewarding midsize luxury car, and the test-drive summary makes clear that its appeal is rooted in refinement. It is described as one of the finest luxury cars on the face of the planet, which fits the car’s upscale mission and helps explain why buyers cross-shop it less on value and more on the experience it delivers. Owners echo that impression, often praising the smooth ride, luxurious interior, powerful performance, advanced features, and elegant styling.
The tradeoff is straightforward: this is a car that asks a lot from the buyer. The expert summary says you will pay a lot for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and owner feedback adds that maintenance costs can become a concern after the warranty period, along with minor wear-and-tear issues. Even so, for shoppers who want a midsize luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort, sophistication, and a premium feel, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands out as a particularly polished choice.

The 2018 Mercedes E300 W213 is a very good value in the used car market. Find one with good maintenance history and not abused. The turbocharged four cylinder engine provides enough power for daily driving, is economical, and the car is very comfortable for long trips.

How much does the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,833 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,833 |
| Year-Round High | $25,220 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,219 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.46% |
Prices have softened 9.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,316 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Technology and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, luxurious interior, powerful performance, advanced features, and elegant styling. That lines up with the overview’s focus on refinement, comfort, and a premium experience, especially if you want a midsize luxury car that feels more special than practical. With 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on the smooth ride, luxurious interior, and powerful performance. The expert driving notes also emphasize how calm, quiet, and composed the car feels, which supports the impression of a well-sorted luxury sedan. The main ownership caution is that maintenance costs can rise after the warranty period, so a clean service history matters if you plan to keep it long term.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has complex options or higher mileage. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, worn interior surfaces, and any evidence that expensive electronics or driver-assistance features are not working as intended. Because this is a luxury model with potentially high maintenance costs, condition and documentation matter more than a simple mileage check.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is loaded with upscale touches such as inlaid wood, bright LED mood lighting, large high-resolution screens, and two-tone leather combinations, while the Luxury Line changes the exterior look with a classic thin-lined grille and standing hood ornament. The coupe has its own pillarless design and sport seats, so you should decide whether you want the more understated luxury look or the sportier two-door style.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 241 horsepower, while the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 makes 329 horsepower and is the stronger choice for passing and relaxed highway confidence. The nine-speed automatic can feel reluctant in Comfort but responds better in Sport and Sport+.
- Safety package: Mercedes includes Car-to-X Communication, Pre-Safe Sound, automatic braking that can detect crossing traffic and people, and adaptive cruise control that can react to changing speed limits. Some features are optional, and many of the most advanced items are tied to expensive packages.
- Infotainment: The E-Class offers a Wi-Fi hotspot, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a built-in web browser, a head-up display, and a configurable digital instrument panel. The system is feature-rich, but it can be a lot to learn at first.
- Fuel efficiency: The E300 is EPA-rated at 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, while the E400 coupe is EPA-rated at 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. The E400 wagon is EPA-rated at 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
Which 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: E300 sedan, E300 4Matic sedan, E400 coupe, E400 4Matic wagon.
Here's the short version:
- E300 sedan: This is the entry point and the most affordable way into the E-Class experience. It gives you the core luxury feel, the 241-horsepower turbo four, and the broad comfort-first character that defines the car, making it the best-value choice if you want the badge and the refinement without stretching too far.
- E300 4Matic sedan: Choose this if you want the same basic package as the E300 sedan but with all-wheel drive for added confidence in poor weather. It makes sense if you live where traction matters more than outright performance.
- E400 coupe: This is the more desirable pick if you want stronger performance and a more distinctive body style. The 329-horsepower twin-turbo V6 is the best engine in the range, and the coupe’s pillarless design gives the car a more special feel.
- E400 4Matic wagon: Pick this if you want the most versatile body style and still want the stronger V6. It suits you best if cargo flexibility matters and you want a more uncommon E-Class configuration.
The safety content notes that many advanced features are optional, and several are bundled into expensive packages, so check equipment carefully before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards patience and comparison shopping.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,316 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.46% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,833, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?
The current average of $22,833 sits slightly below last year's $25,219.
That decline suggests the market has already absorbed some of the model’s depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. Because the current average is still well above the year-round low, condition and equipment will matter a lot when it comes time to resell. Well-kept examples with strong documentation should hold up better than neglected ones, especially given the car’s luxury-car maintenance profile.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and for rollover vulnerability. It is also rated a Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes includes Car-to-X Communication, which can send safety alerts to other E-Class drivers, along with Pre-Safe Sound, automatic braking that can detect crossing traffic and people, and systems that can help with steering and braking during an emergency. Some of the most advanced safety features are optional, and many are tied to expensive packages, so you should verify exactly what is installed on the car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says you get a deeply rewarding luxury experience, with refinement and technology standing out as the core strengths.
The bottom line: The 2018 is a strong choice if you want the E-Class experience at a lower used price and can live with the ownership costs that come with a luxury car. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years, but the 2018 still stands out for its mix of comfort, technology, and prestige.
How does the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class compare to the 2018 BMW 5 Series?
Our experts score the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 8/10 and the 2018 BMW 5 Series 8.3/10.
The E-Class is the more luxurious-feeling choice, with a richer cabin, stronger emphasis on comfort, and a broader sense of occasion. The 5 Series has the edge in expert score and offers better fuel economy in the comparison table, but the E-Class counters with a lower average used price and a more opulent overall experience. If you want the more indulgent car, the Mercedes makes sense; if you want the slightly stronger all-around score and efficiency, the BMW is the better fit.
