Is the 2018 Mazda CX-3 reliable?

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that limited cargo space can make the vehicle less practical if your needs grow over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda CX-3?

At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on its driving feel and refinement, it’s smart to focus on how the suspension, cabin trim, and electronics present in real-world use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport trim includes 16-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, a 7-inch touchscreen with a reversing camera and app integration through Mazda Connect, cruise control, Bluetooth, air conditioning, and a 6-speaker stereo with CD player. The Touring adds 18-inch alloys, auto headlights and wipers, heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto climate controls, heated mirrors, proximity entry, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
• Powertrain: Every CX-3 uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder, DOHC engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It makes 146 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, and the performance notes say it delivers strong, immediate power and quick acceleration for the class.
• Safety package: The CX-3 includes low-speed emergency braking, and the safety content says it carries a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS plus a five-star safety rating from NHTSA. More advanced safety systems are available on higher trims, and the Premium Package adds upgraded forward-collision warning and auto-braking, adaptive cruise, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, and traffic-sign recognition.
• Infotainment: The CX-3 uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect. The tech notes do not mention wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, and the rotary-controlled interface can take time to learn.
• Fuel efficiency: The performance notes cite 31 mpg combined, 29 mpg city, and 34 mpg highway. They also note that real-world driving returned 28 mpg during testing.

Which 2018 Mazda CX-3 trim should I buy?

The 2018 Mazda CX-3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, but it still brings a 7-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, push-button start, Bluetooth, cruise control, and a 6-speaker stereo. It’s the value play if you want the CX-3’s handling and style without stretching the budget.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds heated seats, auto climate control, proximity entry, larger 18-inch wheels, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts. The cost-effectiveness notes specifically call out the Touring with the Preferred Equipment Package as a strong place to land.
• Grand Touring: This trim adds leather-trimmed seats with Alcantara inserts, a head-up display, paddle shifters, navigation, and full exterior LEDs. It makes sense if you want the most upscale CX-3 experience and are willing to pay for it.

Mazda notes that more advanced safety systems are available on higher trims, and the Premium Package is the route to the fullest safety feature set.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda CX-3?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 309 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,317, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Mazda CX-3's resale value?

The current average of $15,182 sits slightly above last year's $15,110.

That small increase suggests the CX-3 has held its value fairly well rather than swinging sharply up or down. For a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to a market that is still willing to pay consistent money for the model.

The steady pricing also means you’re less likely to face a sudden drop in value if you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Mazda CX-3 safe?

The 2018 Mazda CX-3 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The CX-3 includes low-speed emergency braking as standard, and the safety content says Mazda made more advanced safety systems available on higher trims. That means you get a solid baseline, but the most complete safety setup still depends on trim choice and package selection.

Should I buy a 2018 Mazda CX-3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda’s 2018 updates add standard low-speed emergency braking and a more refined cabin.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $15,948, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $15,182 average.
• It adds a fresher, more polished look and a more refined feel.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and are comfortable with the 2018’s compact, driver-focused personality, this year is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a fresher presentation and slightly more upscale appeal, the 2019 is the better secondary path.
