Why it stands out
If you’re looking for a bargain in a safe, roomy, and dependable family-size crossover SUV, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out for delivering those basics without much fuss. It is a 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUV, and its appeal is rooted less in flash than in practicality and value.
Its age is part of the story, since it has been half a decade since the Santa Fe was last redesigned, but that does not make it irrelevant. The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is described as one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a raging bargain in its segment, which makes it especially appealing to buyers who care more about substance than style.

I was already familiar with Hyundai Santa Fes. I think Hyundai offers more for the money compared to other models...at least for now. Until they become popular. Other comparable models are other mid-dized SUVs such as Toyota Hylander, Ford Explorer, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Subaru Forester, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Passport, Honda CR-V.... For me, I do not care about the gadgets and exxtra, I only care about reliability and getting the best used car value for the money. So the Santa Fe is more than I need. If I was driving around the city I would look at the Santa Fe Sport. For a general mid-range the Santa Fe SE. For a little more style and comfort thecSanta Fe Ultimate Limited

How much does the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,368 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,303 |
| Year-Round High | $16,319 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,319 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.95% |
Prices have softened 11.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,067 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the expert score is 8/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The 2018 Santa Fe is aimed at you if you want a 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUV that prioritizes practicality and value over flash. The overview frames it as a bargain in the safe, roomy, family-size crossover space, and the expert review backs that up by calling it a safe, affordable, thoughtfully equipped SUV with plenty to like for buyers who care more about substance than style.
33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview describes it as dependable, and the expert review reinforces that impression by emphasizing its quiet cabin, roomy packaging, and overall value-oriented design. The performance notes also point to a refined V6 powertrain that supplies plenty of power for the vehicle’s size, which supports the case for everyday durability.
Hyundai’s cost-effectiveness notes add that the brand regularly offers discounts, along with an impressive warranty and roadside-assistance program, which can help reduce ownership stress. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age and prior use matter more here than on a newer SUV, so condition and maintenance history should carry extra weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or higher-mileage examples. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any evidence that safety or driver-assistance systems were repaired after a collision.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is well equipped right away, with stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats and a Clean Air cabin air filtration system. The SE Ultimate adds bigger wheels and tires, navigation, a panoramic glass sunroof, premium sound, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. The Limited Ultimate adds HID headlights that aim around curves and corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and silver trim on the doors.
- Powertrain: All trims use a 3.3-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and they are front-wheel drive unless you pay extra for all-wheel drive. The engine is described as refined and strong enough for the Santa Fe’s size.
- Safety package: Hyundai offers driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, and Blue Link adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings for speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries. The review notes that adaptive cruise control could be smoother and the lane-departure warning would be better as a tactile alert.
- Infotainment: The system uses an 8-inch display screen and a CD player, with four shortcut buttons below the screen and knobs for commonly used radio and climate functions. Hyundai also provides three free years of Blue Link subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The review reports 20 mpg on a test loop, matching the EPA’s combined estimate.
Which 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SE Ultimate, and Limited Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want a well-equipped SUV. It already includes the core comfort and family-friendly features, plus the practical stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats and Clean Air cabin filtration system.
- SE Ultimate: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest jump in equipment without moving all the way to the top. You get navigation, a panoramic glass sunroof, premium audio, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and larger wheels and tires.
- Limited Ultimate: This trim is for you if you want the most upscale version of the Santa Fe. Its main additions are the HID headlights that aim around corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and extra exterior trim details.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the review notes that Hyundai offers the full set of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems on the test vehicle.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,067 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,303, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $14,368 sits slightly below last year's $16,319.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone.
Because the model is still drawing interest as a practical family SUV, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. Strong documentation and clean history will matter more if you want to protect your exit price.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?
The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s Blue Link system adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings tied to speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries. The Santa Fe also offers driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, and the expert review says the collection is effective overall.
One caveat is that the review calls out adaptive cruise control tuning and says the lane-departure warning would be better as a tactile alert. Even so, the safety package is a major strength for this model year.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 stands out as one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a strong bargain in its segment.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $15,141, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $14,368 average.
- It shifts toward a more modern two-row setup and a more compact-crossover-friendly size.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest value and a roomy three-row layout, the 2018 is the better buy. If you’d rather spend more for a newer-feeling two-row crossover, the 2019 is the cleaner alternative. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2018’s lower average price and softer market make it the more compelling path.
