Why it stands out
If you’re looking for a bargain in a safe, roomy, and dependable family-size crossover SUV, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a practical choice. Among 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUVs, it is somewhat of a wallflower, and it has been half a decade since it was last redesigned. Even so, its age does not make it irrelevant, because it is one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a raging bargain in its segment.
That combination of value, safety, and family-friendly space is what makes the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe distinctive. It may not draw much attention, but it appeals to buyers who want a straightforward three-row crossover that emphasizes usefulness and affordability over flash.

I was already familiar with Hyundai Santa Fes. I think Hyundai offers more for the money compared to other models...at least for now. Until they become popular. Other comparable models are other mid-dized SUVs such as Toyota Hylander, Ford Explorer, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Subaru Forester, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Passport, Honda CR-V.... For me, I do not care about the gadgets and exxtra, I only care about reliability and getting the best used car value for the money. So the Santa Fe is more than I need. If I was driving around the city I would look at the Santa Fe Sport. For a general mid-range the Santa Fe SE. For a little more style and comfort thecSanta Fe Ultimate Limited

How much does the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,435 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,300.72 |
| Year-Round High | $16,427.44 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,429 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.14% |
Prices have softened 12.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,133 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $14,300.72, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
For you, that means the Santa Fe makes the most sense if you want a safe, roomy, family-size crossover that prioritizes value and usefulness over flash. The overview and expert notes both point to a practical three-row SUV with strong safety credentials, generous equipment, and a bargain-minded position in its segment.
33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview describes it as dependable, and the expert notes reinforce that it is a practical, family-focused SUV with strong value and safety credentials. The performance writeup also points to a refined powertrain and a generally quiet cabin, which supports the case for everyday durability and comfort.
Hyundai’s cost-effectiveness notes add that the brand’s warranty and roadside-assistance programs help strengthen the ownership experience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior maintenance and wear items have been kept up, since age and mileage matter more than the badge here.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been in any collision. Focus on body condition, alignment, braking feel, and signs of uneven wear, since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most on an older family crossover.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is well equipped, but the SE Ultimate adds bigger wheels and tires, navigation, a panoramic glass sunroof, premium sound, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. The Limited Ultimate adds HID headlights that aim around corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and silver trim, but the SE Ultimate is the better value.
- Powertrain: All trims use a 3.3-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the SUV is front-wheel drive unless you pay extra for all-wheel drive. The Eco mode can make it feel lethargic, while the standard setup delivers plenty of power.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are effective overall, and Blue Link adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings. The system could be refined further, especially the adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch display, a CD player, four shortcut buttons, knobs for common functions, navigation, and three free years of Blue Link subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert testing returned 20 mpg on a combined-driving loop, matching the EPA estimate cited in the review.
Which 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SE Ultimate, and Limited Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and still want a well-equipped SUV with stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats and a Clean Air cabin air filtration system.
- SE Ultimate: This is the best-value trim because it adds the biggest comfort and convenience upgrades, including navigation, a panoramic glass sunroof, premium audio, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats.
- Limited Ultimate: Choose this only if you specifically want the extra lighting and second-row captain’s chairs, since it costs more but adds relatively little beyond the SE Ultimate.
The safety content notes that Hyundai offers the full set of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, but the test vehicle’s adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning could be improved.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,133 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,300.72, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $14,435 sits slightly below last year's $16,429.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means your future resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. Well-kept examples should still attract family buyers because the Santa Fe’s value, safety, and practicality remain its core appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s safety suite includes automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings tied to speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries. The expert notes also say the Santa Fe’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are effective overall, though adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning could be better refined.
One caveat is that the review still points to room for improvement in how some of the active safety tech behaves, even though the overall safety case is very strong.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a bargain in its segment.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $15,158, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $14,435 average.
- It moves into a newer generation and sits more clearly as a value-focused crossover.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2018 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong safety and value. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer-generation feel, the 2019 is the better alternative, but price-sensitive buyers should start with the 2018 and focus on condition and history.
