Why it stands out
If you’re looking for a bargain in a safe, roomy, and dependable family-size crossover SUV, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a practical choice. Among 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUVs, it is somewhat of a wallflower, and it has been half a decade since it was last redesigned. Even so, its age does not make it irrelevant, because it is one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a raging bargain in its segment.
That combination of value, safety, and family-friendly space is what makes the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe distinctive. It may not draw much attention, but it appeals to buyers who want a straightforward three-row crossover that emphasizes usefulness and affordability over flash.

I was already familiar with Hyundai Santa Fes. I think Hyundai offers more for the money compared to other models...at least for now. Until they become popular. Other comparable models are other mid-dized SUVs such as Toyota Hylander, Ford Explorer, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Subaru Forester, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Passport, Honda CR-V.... For me, I do not care about the gadgets and exxtra, I only care about reliability and getting the best used car value for the money. So the Santa Fe is more than I need. If I was driving around the city I would look at the Santa Fe Sport. For a general mid-range the Santa Fe SE. For a little more style and comfort thecSanta Fe Ultimate Limited

How much does the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,511 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,319.16 |
| Year-Round High | $16,414.34 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,348 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.23% |
Prices have softened 11.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,138 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare. If you find a listing below $14,319.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
For you, that means this Santa Fe makes the most sense if you want a safe, roomy, family-size crossover that prioritizes value and utility over flash. The overview also frames it as a straightforward three-row SUV with a bargain price position in its segment, and the expert test drive notes that it is quiet, comfortable, roomy, safe, affordable, thoughtfully designed, and comprehensively equipped.
The market also shows 26.8% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview describes it as dependable, and the expert test drive reinforces that impression by emphasizing its quiet cabin, comfort, and strong value proposition. The performance notes also point to a refined V6 that supplies plenty of power for the vehicle’s size, which supports the sense that it is built for steady everyday use rather than drama.
Hyundai’s warranty and roadside-assistance programs add to the ownership appeal, and the three-year Blue Link subscription period is a useful perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright complexity and more about making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by family-duty use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or interior abuse, since this is the kind of SUV that often sees heavy family use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is well equipped right out of the box, with stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats and a Clean Air cabin air filtration system, while the SE Ultimate adds bigger wheels and tires, navigation, a panoramic glass sunroof, premium sound, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. The Limited Ultimate adds HID headlights that aim around corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and silver trim, but the step up is relatively small.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.3-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission, and the SUV is front-wheel drive unless you pay extra for all-wheel drive. The engine is described as refined and strong enough for the Santa Fe’s size, while Eco mode can make it feel lethargic.
- Safety package: Hyundai offers driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems, and Blue Link adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings for speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries. The expert notes that adaptive cruise control could be smoother and that the lane-departure warning is audible rather than tactile.
- Infotainment: The Santa Fe uses an 8-inch display screen, a CD player, shortcut buttons, and knobs for common functions. Navigation is included on higher equipment, and Hyundai provides three free years of Blue Link subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: During testing, the Santa Fe returned an even 20 mpg on the expert’s loop, matching the EPA’s estimate for combined driving.
Which 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SE Ultimate, and Limited Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the core Santa Fe experience without paying for extras. It is already well equipped, and its standard stain- and odor-resistant cloth seats and Clean Air cabin air filtration system make it especially appealing if you haul kids or pets.
- SE Ultimate: This is the best-value trim if you want the biggest jump in equipment. It adds navigation, a panoramic glass sunroof, premium sound, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and larger wheels and tires, making it the most compelling upgrade for many shoppers.
- Limited Ultimate: This trim adds HID headlights that aim around corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and silver trim. It is the right pick if those extras matter to you, but the content suggests the upgrade is modest relative to the SE Ultimate.
The safety content also notes that Hyundai offers the full set of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems for the Santa Fe, so you should verify which equipment is included on the specific trim you’re considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,138 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,319.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $14,511 sits slightly below last year's $16,348.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale upside may be more limited unless your vehicle stands out on condition, mileage, and equipment.
The good news is that this model’s value story is still supported by its safety reputation, family-friendly utility, and broad appeal to practical shoppers. If you keep it clean, well maintained, and documented, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick Plus award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s safety suite includes automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings for speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries through Blue Link. The expert test drive also says the Santa Fe comes with the full set of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems Hyundai offers for this model.
There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind: the adaptive cruise control could be smoother, and the lane-departure warning is audible rather than tactile. Even so, the overall safety package is a major strength for this SUV.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a bargain in its segment.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $15,189, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $14,511 average.
- It moves into a clearer role in Hyundai’s lineup and offers a more modern crossover positioning.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2018 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with strong safety and family-friendly utility. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year feel and a slightly different market position, the 2019 is the secondary path to consider.
