CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Honda HR-V
overall

Summary
With 990 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,179.00, 30.7% of 2018 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Honda HR-V 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
59.9% of 2018 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Honda HR-V stands out as a small crossover that delivers big-car utility in a city-friendly package. Its appeal starts with the way it blends subcompact dimensions with the kind of practicality shoppers often want from a larger vehicle, making it an easy fit for daily driving without giving up versatility.
What makes the HR-V distinctive is its Fit hatchback foundation, higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and more premium cabin. It is also positioned below the CR-V and Pilot, and the expert test drive data notes that it is thousands of dollars less than the popular CR-V. That combination gives the 2018 HR-V a clear value angle for buyers who want crossover usefulness without moving up to a larger, pricier model.
There are limits to that bargain, though. The same source notes that when priced above $27,000, you might consider upgrading your seat. Owner feedback also points to sluggish acceleration and limited visibility, even as many drivers praise the HR-V for comfort, great gas mileage, user-friendly features, and a smooth ride.

The car is fantastic for its value. Loaded with neat features including remote start that wasn’t advertised! Heated cloth seats, a sun roof, side mirror camera and back up camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, eco option when driving etc. lots of trunk room and the back seats fold down as well for extra space! for me personally the car is not missing anything. It’s a major upgrade from what I had previously and it’s one of the best financial decisions I made going from an unreliable American made car make, to a reliable and trustworthy car make

I went for the FWD to get better gas mileage. It gets great economy. About 38 mpg on highway and 26 or so around the city and suburbs. Comfortable with good dashboard.

Great gas mileage, features were not over the top but dummy friendly to figure out. Handles nicely, fun to drive. I think the car is an excellent value. Wish it had arm rests, but other than that, its perfect!

Is the 2018 Honda HR-V a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 6.67/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, great gas mileage, and user-friendly features, and they also highlight the interior versatility that makes it useful for family duty and daily commuting. The overview frames it as a city-friendly crossover that gives you big-car utility in a smaller footprint, with a value angle versus larger Honda SUVs. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback describes it as a reliable choice, and it also calls out a smooth ride and daily-driver friendliness. The expert drive notes that the HR-V is composed and comfortable when you’re gentle with the throttle, and the cost-effectiveness commentary reinforces that it feels practical and well built for the segment. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with its older-tech, modest-power setup over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint match, and any signs of prior repair. Because the HR-V’s appeal is tied to its practicality and comfort, you should also pay close attention to cabin condition, visibility, and how the drivetrain feels in everyday driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LX has similar alloys in one color, while EX and EX-L trims get two-tone 17-inch wheels. Only EX-L trims come with leather, and the cabin is described as more premium than you might expect for the class.
- Powertrain: A single 1.8-liter 4-cylinder makes 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. The front-wheel-drive LX and EX can be had with Honda’s 6-speed manual, while all-wheel drive is optional on all trims and pairs with the CVT.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a multi-angle reversing camera, and optional LaneWatch uses a camera in the right side-view mirror to show the blind spot on the center screen. Forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available.
- Infotainment: The system does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. It is slow to respond, the maps are low resolution, and the menu structure is confusing.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is EPA rated at between 25 and 27 mpg city and 31 and 34 mpg highway. Our AWD EX-L is rated at 27/31, and we averaged 25 mpg over 300 miles.
Which 2018 Honda HR-V trim should I buy?
The 2018 Honda HR-V is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and the core HR-V formula. It gives you the practical crossover shape, the standard rear camera, and the option of a manual transmission on front-wheel-drive models.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday appeal without pushing you into the highest price tier. You still get the HR-V’s useful packaging, and the trim brings a more polished look with two-tone 17-inch wheels.
- EX-L: Choose this if you want the most upscale cabin in the lineup. It adds leather and the top-trim equipment mentioned in the tech and audio coverage, but the price jump makes it harder to justify unless you specifically want the nicer interior.
Safety-wise, the HR-V does not offer forward-collision alert with auto-braking, and that missing feature is part of why it does not earn a Top Safety Pick.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Honda HR-V?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,033 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,366.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $16,174 sits slightly below last year's $16,236.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price trend can make it easier to estimate your exit value and avoid the sharp depreciation swings that hurt some used crossovers. The HR-V’s strong owner satisfaction should also help keep demand healthy among shoppers who value practicality and comfort.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Honda HR-V safe?
The HR-V scored the top Good rating in four of five crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with an Acceptable rating for front side overlap. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates the HR-V at five-star overall, with five-star ratings in side crash tests and four-star ratings for frontal crashes.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes Honda’s multi-angle reversing camera, and optional LaneWatch helps show the blind spot on the central screen. The main caveat is that forward-collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and other electronic safety features are not available, which limits the HR-V’s active-safety depth by modern standards.
Should I buy a 2018 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary highlights a subcompact crossover with higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin, while also noting that it sits thousands of dollars below the CR-V.
The bottom line: If you want a used HR-V with stable pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and a practical city-friendly footprint, the 2018 is a sensible place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can shop the broader HR-V market for the best deal, but the 2018’s combination of value, utility, and steady demand makes it an easy year to recommend.
