CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Canyon

Summary
With 661 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,271, 32.2% of 2018 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Canyon stands out as a midsize pickup that leans more upscale than many of its rivals. In the second-generation lineup, GMC had already given the Canyon a more luxurious identity, and by 2018 it offered a broad range of trims and body styles, from a basic work-oriented setup to more refined versions. That mix of utility and comfort is part of its appeal: it is smaller and easier to maneuver than a full-size truck, yet still offers the kind of capability many buyers want from a pickup.
For 2018, the Canyon’s available equipment made it especially versatile. The SLE trim brought an eight-inch touchscreen, a smarter interior with fewer hard plastics, a wifi hotspot, OnStar telematics, and Siri Eyes Free control for iPhones. The top SLT added automatic climate control, leather seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated front seats. Buyers looking for more rugged use could also choose the All-Terrain package, which added all-terrain tires, an off-road-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, and front recovery hooks. The Denali trim added a more luxurious feel with 20-inch chrome wheels, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the Driver Alert package, a Bose premium audio system, and a wireless charging pad.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Canyon’s fuel economy was respectable rather than class-leading, and the more off-road-focused versions gave up some performance and road agility. Crash testing was also mixed, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration giving the Canyon four stars overall and for frontal protection, five stars for side impacts, and three stars in rollover tests. Even so, for shoppers who want a compact pickup with a more premium personality, the 2018 GMC Canyon offers a distinctive blend of refinement, capability, and everyday usability.

While not having a lot to compare it to, it appears so far to be a strong running engine (2.8 Duramax) . The seating seams hard in contrast to my last truck (2500 HD ) , both being Denali versions with leather seats . The fuel mileage is outstanding averaging low to mid 30s . The electronics package is full of creature comforts including heated and cooled seats . Overall a nice ride.

It also gives you flexibility, with options that range from work-oriented setups to off-road-focused versions, so you can match the truck more closely to how you plan to use it. With 32.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2018 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a truck that many owners feel good about living with, especially because of its strong running engine and comfortable cabin. At the same time, some drivers mention transmission issues, so reliability-minded shoppers should pay close attention to service records and how the truck drives. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable, but only if you verify maintenance history and avoid examples with unresolved mechanical concerns.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from trucks with collision records. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or a rough service history. Focus on overall condition, signs of repair quality, and how the transmission and drivetrain behave on a test drive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Canyon?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 679 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,202.96, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $21,194 sits slightly below last year's $23,612.
That decline suggests the Canyon has become more affordable for buyers, but it also means sellers may face more price pressure than they did a year ago. If you plan to resell later, you should expect value retention to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the truck has been maintained. Trucks with cleaner histories and stronger presentation should still attract interest, but the softer market means you may need to price competitively.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,156, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $21,194 average.
- It emphasizes serious towing and hauling in a compact midsize package.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced choice, the 2018 is the stronger pick because it combines a lower current price than last year, solid owner satisfaction, and a broader mix of trims and features. If your top priority is saving money upfront, the 2017 is the better value path, especially if you want a more capability-first truck and can live with fewer of the 2018's refinements.
