2017 Ford Escape
SE FWD

$9,790
Overview

Currently in its third generation, the Ford Escape compact crossover SUV competes with the likes of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Hyundai Santa Fe. Despite its adventurous-sounding name, the Escape is more of a large, lifted hatchback than a true off-roader, as it comes standard with front-wheel drive (FWD) and only offers all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option. It received a new engine and a new nose last year, so it enters 2018 largely unchanged. Available in S, SE, SEL, and Titanium trims, the 2018 Escape starts at just under $24,000, but loaded models can run well over 30 grand. A separate hybrid model—the Escape Hybrid—is also available and was actually the first hybrid SUV to enter the market back in 2004.
The base powertrain for the 2018 Escape is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 168 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. That makes for fairly disappointing performance in a car of this size, and it gets the worst fuel economy of the lineup at 21 mpg city, 29 highway, and 24 combined. Last year saw the introduction of a turbo 1.5-liter 4-cylinder powertrain for the SE trim that, despite its small size, puts out 179 hp and 177 lb-ft. Its power comes in lower in the rev range than the base engine and it’s also the most fuel frugal of the bunch, with EPA figures of 23, 30, and 26 with FWD and 22, 28, and 24 with AWD.
The Escape’s range-topping engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that’s much more potent than the other two at 245 hp and 275 lb-ft and will hit 60 mph in about 7 seconds. Even with all the extra grunt from the larger turbo, fuel-economy isn’t that much different at 22, 29, and 25 with FWD and 20, 27, and 23 with AWD.
The Escape is offered in either FWD or AWD configuration with the exception of the base engine, which comes exclusively with FWD. The only available transmission is a 6-speed automatic, and turbocharged models receive paddle shifters. All Escapes also have active grille shutters for smoother airflow across the nose, and turbocharged models have a stop/start function for saving fuel in traffic. Although it’s technically an SUV, the current-generation Escape drives more like a zippy hatchback than some of its peers, with firm steering and relatively little body roll. An available tow package adds a trailer sway control function.
Inside, the 2018 Escape comes standard with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, a 6-speaker stereo, and a 4.2-inch display screen with Ford’s Sync infotainment system. The SE trim comes with satellite radio, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats, while the SEL further adds leather upholstery, a power tailgate, and an 8.0-inch screen for the infotainment system. At the top of the range, the Titanium trim receives an upgraded 12-speaker Sony stereo system, a sensor for the liftgate, ambient interior lighting, keyless ignition, and several active safety features. Interior room for the 2018 Escape is decent but unremarkable for its class, with 34 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 68 cubic feet with the seatbacks folded.
The Escape is also decent but unremarkable in its crash-testing performance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2017 model top Good results in most areas but only an Acceptable score in the small-overlap frontal test, while the National Highway Traffic and Safety Association (NHTSA) awarded the 2018 model a 5-star overall rating. Every Escape is equipped with a reversing camera and the MyKey system, which allows the owner to place limits on the vehicle’s maximum speed and other functions. Optional safety tech includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, parking assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping alert.

Love it!! Very nicely appointed with more tech than Ive learned how to use yet. Im still shocked that this was a $20,000 car even though it has 100,000 miles it feels brand new and smells like it too!! The remote start and fully adjustable driver and passenger leather heated seats are just two of the extras that I really appreciate. Its not missing anything, except a sunroof.

How much does the 2018 Ford Escape cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,525 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,426.68 |
| Year-Round High | $12,381.81 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,381 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.92% |
Prices have softened 6.92% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 4,568 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across price and condition.
If you find a listing below $11,426.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Ford Escape a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Ford Escape earns a 4.83/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its performance, interior space, and value for money, while also noting its stylish design and decent mileage. The market also shows 30.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise centered on performance, comfort, and value. That kind of consistent satisfaction usually matters most when you want a used SUV you can count on over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure a specific example has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Ford Escape?
At 71.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from ones with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection and pay close attention to body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear. If you’re comparing multiple listings, focus on the ones that combine clean history with the best overall condition rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Ford Escape?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,568 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,426.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $11,525 sits slightly below last year's $12,381.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and history will matter a lot, because cleaner examples usually hold buyer interest better than vehicles with prior damage or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,575, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $11,525 average.
- It adds a mid-cycle refresh with a more functional cabin and updated equipment.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2018 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction. If your top priority is spending less upfront, the 2017 is the better value-oriented alternative, especially if you find one in strong condition.
