Is the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze reliable?

The expert evaluation also reinforces the Cruze’s long-distance, everyday usability by emphasizing its efficient diesel setup and relaxed drivability. On the cost side, the expert notes that the diesel version can be a viable buy if you can negotiate well, which helps offset ownership concerns.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car has been maintained well and still delivers the efficiency and drivability that define the model.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any prior collision. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car drives as smoothly as the reviews suggest. If you’re shopping a diesel example, pay extra attention to how it starts, idles, and behaves under load.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Available only in LT trim, the diesel hatchback adds a more distinctive drivetrain and comes standard with the Convenience Package, including a power driver’s seat, keyless entry and ignition, and remote start.
• Powertrain: The diesel setup uses a 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine with a 9-speed automatic, and it’s described as strong enough for highway passing while delivering impressive mileage.
• Safety package: Teen Driver is standard, and the car includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the MyLink system is paired with them for easier phone-based voice control.
• Fuel efficiency: The diesel is described as returning a combined rating of 35 mpg, with real-world trips averaging at least 40 mpg and a highway loop returning better than 50 mpg.

Which 2018 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 1 trim level: LT Diesel Hatchback.

Here's the short version:

• LT Diesel Hatchback: This is the one to target if you want the Cruze’s most distinctive setup, because it combines the diesel powertrain with the Convenience Package, standard keyless entry and ignition, remote start, and a power driver’s seat. It’s the best-value choice if your priority is efficiency and you want the diesel-specific character the model is known for.

Teen Driver is standard, and the safety equipment includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Chevrolet Cruze?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,329 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.66% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,842, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $10,015 sits slightly below last year's $10,615.

That price movement suggests the Cruze has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you reduce the amount of value left to lose before resale.

The market also appears to reward the model’s practical strengths, especially efficiency and comfort. A well-kept Cruze with strong demand features should be easier to move later than one with visible wear or a rough history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze earns five-star overall and frontal crash ratings from NHTSA, along with four-star ratings in side crash and rollover tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Cruze includes full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags, and the expert review highlights its strong stopping distance as another safety plus. Teen Driver is standard, which adds useful controls for secondary drivers.

The main caveat is that the side and rollover results trail the top frontal score, so you should still inspect the specific car’s condition carefully and not assume every used example has been equally protected over time.

Should I buy a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 stands out for its diesel availability and efficiency-focused appeal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $9,225, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $10,015 average.
• It adds a sloping rear hatch for more utility and a stronger family-friendly focus.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of value, inventory, and diesel-specific appeal, the 2018 is the better starting point. If your top priority is spending less upfront, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly alternative.
