CarGurus Analysis: 2018 BMW X3
overall

Summary
With 1,809 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,821, 33.9% of 2018 BMW X3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW X3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
69.1% of 2018 X3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW X3 stands out because it received a complete overhaul for the year, making this third-generation version entirely new even if its familiar shape does not immediately give that away. Built in South Carolina, it is one of five BMW crossovers on sale, and BMW’s crossover lineup was described as continuing to grow in size and price above it.
What makes the 2018 BMW X3 distinctive is less about shouting for attention and more about refining a crowded compact-crossover formula. The source frames it as BMW’s second most popular crossover and suggests that, in a market where every automaker offers compact crossovers, the real question is how a BMW separates itself from the pack. That makes the X3 appealing to buyers who want a fresh redesign from a premium brand in a segment full of lookalikes.

Great features for the price, pretty much everything youd expect from a luxury medium sized SUV. However pay close attention to the feature packages the vehicle has selected, as things you might expect to be standard equipment may not come standard. The M40i is quick and comfortable, competes well against competition from Audi and Mercedes by being quicker and sounding better with the inline turbo six cylinder. Dont forget to stay on top of the preventative maintenance or repairs will be frequent and costly.

How much does the 2018 BMW X3 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,837 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,367.35 |
| Year-Round High | $19,201.30 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,150 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.86% |
Prices have softened 6.86% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,807 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $17,367.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 BMW X3 a good car?
Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
The 2018 X3 is a complete overhaul for the year, so you’re looking at a third-generation model that was entirely new even if its shape still feels familiar. It fits in the middle of BMW’s crossover lineup, and the overview frames it as a compact crossover that still tries to stand apart in a crowded segment.
The market also shows 34.0% good or great deals, which suggests you can still find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 BMW X3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2018 X3 is described as a well-built, South Carolina-made crossover with BMW’s usual emphasis on premium execution, and the expert notes highlight a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic and a turbocharged four-cylinder that pulls hard without much vibration. BMW also includes three years or 36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, including oil, brake fluid, air filters, and spark plugs.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that BMW’s premium technology and options can make upkeep more expensive if the vehicle has been poorly maintained or heavily optioned.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW X3?
At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment on the car matches the trim and option packages advertised.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is conservative and tasteful, with standard SensaTec vinyl and a panoramic moonroof that helps the X3 feel airy, while higher equipment levels add more upscale convenience and tech. Base cars can feel less richly equipped than the better-optioned versions.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four is rated at 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the xDrive M40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six with 355 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, and the 8-speed automatic is a standout.
- Safety package: Forward-collision alert, auto braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control are only available with two option packages. The included Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: The X3 includes the latest iDrive interface, touchscreen capability, a 360-degree camera system on higher equipment, wireless device charging, Apple CarPlay, in-car Wi-Fi, and a head-up display with fast voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: No MPG or MPGe figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2018 BMW X3 trim should I buy?
The 2018 BMW X3 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive30i, xDrive M40i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive30i: This is the trim to target if you want the core X3 experience at the lower entry point. It uses the 2.0-liter turbo four, gets the standard all-wheel-drive setup, and still delivers the smooth 8-speed automatic and the upscale cabin feel that define the model.
- xDrive M40i: Choose this if you want the stronger performance story. It brings the 3.0-liter turbo inline six, upgraded brakes, a sport suspension, and a more aggressive character, so it suits you best if you care more about speed and response than value.
The safety package note to keep in mind is that forward-collision alert, auto braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control require option packages, while the included Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW X3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,807 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.86% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,367.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $17,837 sits slightly below last year's $19,150.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to resell later, the current softness means your upside depends more on buying well now and keeping the vehicle in strong condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 BMW X3 safe?
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The 2018 X3 was too new to have been rated by NHTSA or IIHS in the available data, but the previous 2017 X3 scored a five-star NHTSA rating and top scores in all IIHS crash and crash-prevention tests, with only a Marginal for headlight performance.
BMW includes a driver-assistance package with blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, while forward-collision alert, auto braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control require additional option packages. The X3 also adds uncommon safety features such as a pre-collision system that can close the sunroof and windows, tighten the seat belts, disable the battery, apply the brakes, and unlock the doors after a crash.
The main caveat is that some of the most advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should verify exactly which package a used example has before you buy.
Should I buy a 2018 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model year is notable because it received a complete overhaul and introduced the third-generation X3.
The bottom line: If you want the newest-feeling version of this generation and you value the 2018 redesign, this is the year to focus on. If your priority is stretching your budget, you can also compare nearby years and use the softer pricing here as a benchmark for negotiating.
