How much does the 2018 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 9.57% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,363 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and equipment.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — it earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10. Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features, and the model’s plug-in hybrid setup adds efficiency to the mix. For you, that means this 5 Series fits especially well if you want a midsize luxury sport sedan that blends comfort, upscale features, and frugality. The market also shows 35.1% good and great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a car that feels smooth, comfortable, and generally dependable enough to be recommended for daily use, even though some drivers mention engine noise and possible reliability concerns. The expert review reinforces that this plug-in hybrid is designed to deliver strong efficiency without giving up the regular-car feel of a traditional automatic, which helps it feel familiar over time. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the hybrid system and any option-heavy equipment have been maintained properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily. Focus on condition, charging-related hardware, and any signs that the car has been used hard or repaired after a collision. Because this model can be loaded with expensive equipment, it’s worth confirming that every feature works as intended before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 530e differs only slightly from the gasoline-powered 5 Series, with eDrive badging, a charging port on the front fender, ambient lighting in BMW blue, and a flush LED gauge cluster. It also gives up some trunk space, so you should check whether that tradeoff works for your needs.
• Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup adds electric torque and strong efficiency, and it still uses a traditional automatic that shifts like a regular car. It’s described as quick and planted, with the electric motor providing immediate response.
• Safety package: The car was awarded a 5-star safety rating from NHTSA and named a Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS. Available driver-assistance and parking features were bundled into optional packages, so you should verify which systems are actually installed on the car you’re considering.
• Infotainment: The iDrive system includes additional eDrive pages, and Apple CarPlay was optional. The review also notes that some tech features, including Gesture Control, were not especially convincing.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530e is rated at 72 MPGe when the battery is topped off, and 29 mpg combined when running on gasoline alone. It can also travel about 16 miles on electric power.

Which 2018 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is offered in 1 trim level: 530e.

Here's the short version:

The 530e is the one to buy if you want the lowest-priced 5 Series with the biggest efficiency advantage. It adds the plug-in hybrid drivetrain, strong electric torque, and the best cost-effectiveness story in the lineup, while still feeling like a normal luxury sedan to drive. If you want the most value, this is the trim that best captures the model’s mix of luxury and frugality.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that some of the most desirable driver-assistance and parking features were optional rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,363 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.57% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,134, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $18,219 sits slightly below last year's $20,148.

That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the low end of the current range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. The model’s strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand among used shoppers who want a luxury sedan with efficiency and comfort.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a 5-star safety rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety content also points to a middle-of-the-pack 124-foot stopping distance with the optional M Sport Brakes, which matters when you’re dealing with extra hybrid weight. The available safety and parking features were bundled into optional packages, so you should confirm exactly what’s installed on any used example you’re considering. If you’re comparing cars, this is one area where equipment level can vary a lot from one listing to the next.

Should I buy a 2018 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the new 530e plug-in hybrid, making this year especially appealing for efficiency-minded luxury shoppers.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $16,970, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $18,219 average.
• It is a thoroughly renewed redesign with new engines, a fresh chassis, and updated technology.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2018 if you want the plug-in hybrid 530e and a strong mix of efficiency, luxury, and value. If your priority is simply spending less up front, the 2017 is the better price-first alternative.

How does the 2018 BMW 5 Series compare to the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Our experts score the 2018 BMW 5 Series 8.3/10 and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 8/10. The BMW is the better pick if you want the lower average used price and the stronger cost-effectiveness story. The Mercedes has a slightly higher share of good and great deals, but the BMW’s plug-in hybrid setup gives it a more distinctive efficiency advantage. If you want the more affordable luxury sedan with a stronger value case, the BMW has the edge.
