What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Audi A5 Sportback?

At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing cars with similar prices. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the car you’re considering. Because some owners wish the car had features like navigation and folding mirrors, it’s worth checking the exact equipment list before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The A5 Sportback is offered in A5 and S5 model series, and in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim levels. The Premium Plus trim adds a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert and Vehicle Exit Assist, while Prestige adds front and rear parking sensors, a top-view camera system, and more connected features. The base setup is strongest for buyers who care most about the car’s style and core luxury feel, while higher trims better suit you if you want more convenience and driver-assistance equipment.
• Powertrain: The A5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission and standard Quattro all-wheel drive. The S5 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. If you want the quicker, more performance-focused choice, the S5 is the one to look at.
• Safety package: Every A5 Sportback includes forward-collision warning, low-to-moderate-speed automatic emergency braking, occupant-preparation technology, and a braking system designed to reduce the risk of a secondary collision after airbag deployment. Premium Plus adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Vehicle Exit Assist. Prestige adds front and rear parking sensors, a top-view camera system, and the Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and traffic-sign recognition.
• Infotainment: Audi Virtual Cockpit uses a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation screen and is optional on Premium Plus and standard on Prestige. The latest MMI Touch infotainment system brings an 8.3-inch display and handwriting recognition, and Audi Connect packages add connected services including emergency calling and a Wi-Fi hotspot on the higher tiers.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the car returned no better than 22.5 mpg on a test loop and notes an EPA rating of 27 mpg in combined driving.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Audi A5 Sportback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.

• Deal availability: 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 279 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,594, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Audi A5 Sportback's resale value?

The current average of $17,594 sits slightly below last year's $19,231.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may temper what a future seller can expect in the near term. If you buy at a sensible price now, you reduce the risk of taking an immediate depreciation hit. The car’s niche appeal and strong owner satisfaction can still support demand when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Audi A5 Sportback safe?

The 2018 Audi A5 Sportback earns an overall score of 5 stars from NHTSA, but frontal-impact protection for the driver and front-seat passenger measures no better than 4 stars.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every A5 Sportback includes forward-collision warning, low-to-moderate-speed automatic emergency braking, occupant-preparation technology, and a braking system intended to reduce the risk of a secondary collision after airbag deployment. Premium Plus adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Vehicle Exit Assist, while Prestige adds front and rear parking sensors, a top-view camera system, and the Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and traffic-sign recognition.

The main caveat is that the federal crash test result includes a lower frontal-impact rating than the overall score, so you should pay close attention to the car’s safety equipment level and condition when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2018 Audi A5 Sportback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 36.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 stands out for blending style, performance, and utility in a five-door hatchback body.

The bottom line: If you want the A5 Sportback’s distinctive design and practical hatchback layout, the 2018 is a strong year to target because prices have eased and inventory is available. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping carefully for a lower-mileage, well-documented example with the equipment you want, since the best value will usually come from a clean, well-optioned car rather than the cheapest listing.
