overall

Summary
With 64 currently listed for sale near Milwaukee, WI and an average price of $12,393, 28.1% of 2017 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Passat 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a refined take on the classic midsize American sedan, with a bit of refinement and some new standard features helping define its appeal. Volkswagen also simplified the trim lineup for this model year, dropping the SEL trim while keeping the SEL Premium.
That trim shuffle brought more standard equipment to the Passat’s upper trims. Every Passat trim above the base S now includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Every Passat also gets a standard forward-collision warning system with autonomous braking, which adds an important layer of everyday safety tech.
For buyers, the 2017 Passat’s appeal is easy to understand: it emphasizes comfort, fuel efficiency, value for money, and a spacious interior. Owners also praise its enjoyable driving experience and low maintenance costs, though some feel the engine power could be stronger.

Probably the best sedan Ive owned. Great fuel economy, comfortable for short and long trips, handles well, visibility is good enough, ample space for driver ans passengers, and trunk space is enormous. Only downside is the power, but you can always tune it for a bit more. I miss the passat. Maybe Ill get another one.

The owner feedback also points to reliability, low maintenance costs, and a car that many drivers feel they can count on over time. On the road, the Passat’s power delivery is described as predictable and linear, which supports the impression of a dependable daily driver rather than a finicky one.
The cost-effectiveness notes also mention attractive financing and an extended warranty announcement for later model years, which reinforces the idea that Volkswagen was trying to make ownership easier. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright fragility and more about choosing a well-kept example with a clean service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S includes 16-inch alloys, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlights, a 5-inch touchscreen with reversing camera, cruise control, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. Moving up to the R-Line adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, VW App Connect, 19-inch alloys, R-Line bumpers, heated front seats with driver power adjustment, pleather, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, and heated side mirrors. The SE swaps in 17-inch alloys and adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, and rear air vents. The SEL Premium adds power for the front passenger seat, a driver memory system, real leather upholstery, power-folding mirrors, a Fender stereo, and lane-departure warning.
- Powertrain: The 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with 23 mpg city and 34 highway, and it reaches 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. The 3.6-liter V6 makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft, hits 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, and returns 20 mpg city and 28 highway. The 1.8-liter is the better value if you want usable power and stronger efficiency.
- Safety package: Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with autonomous braking. Above the base S, you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect. The SEL Premium adds lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: The base car uses a 5-inch touchscreen with a reversing camera. Higher trims bring a 6.3-inch touchscreen, and the Technology Package adds an upgraded infotainment system with navigation and 8 speakers. VW App Connect is available above the base S.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter engine is rated at 23 mpg city and 34 highway, or 27 combined. The 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 20 mpg city and 28 highway, or 23 combined.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value entry point if you want the essentials without stretching the budget. You still get 16-inch alloys, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlights, a 5-inch touchscreen with reversing camera, cruise control, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat, but you give up blind-spot monitoring and VW App Connect.
- R-Line: This trim adds the missing convenience and connectivity features from the base car, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and VW App Connect, along with 19-inch alloys, R-Line bumpers, heated front seats, driver power adjustment, pleather, and a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen. It brings a lot of equipment for the money, but the larger wheels may hurt ride comfort.
- SE: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers. It keeps the more reasonable 17-inch alloys and adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, and rear air vents. If you want a balanced mix of comfort, convenience, and price, this is the trim to target.
- SEL Premium: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with real leather upholstery, a Fender stereo, a driver memory system, power for the front passenger seat, power-folding mirrors, and lane-departure warning. It suits you if you want the most upscale Passat experience and are willing to pay for it.
Every Passat trim above the base S includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect, while the base S does not.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 769 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,535, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $10,610 sits slightly below last year's $11,369.
That softer pricing suggests the Passat has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. If you pay close to the low end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting losses later.
The model’s value-oriented reputation and strong owner satisfaction can help keep demand steady among used shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, with a four-star rating in front-impact protection, and top marks from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Passat gets a standard forward-collision warning system with autonomous braking. Above the base S, you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect, while the SEL Premium adds lane-departure warning.
The main caveat is that braking performance is only average, especially with the heavier V6 model. If safety is a top priority, the standard driver-assistance equipment is a strong plus, but you should still inspect the car carefully and make sure the safety systems are functioning properly.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Volkswagen added standard blind-spot monitoring above the base S and made forward-collision warning with autonomous braking standard across the lineup.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,309, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,610 average.
- It offers a straightforward, family-friendly character with an excellent midsize-sedan feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,410, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,610 average.
- It adds a more powerful base engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety equipment, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can save you money, while the 2018 makes sense if you want the newer powertrain and are willing to pay more.
