CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Prius

Summary
With 509 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,461, 35.0% of 2017 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Prius 5 / 5 stars.
54.8% of 2017 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Prius stands out as a used hybrid that blends excellent fuel efficiency with a strong reputation for reliability. In the fourth-generation Prius, Toyota focused on meaningful improvements in fuel efficiency, performance, and design, while also stiffening the body structure and upgrading the suspension for better handling and ride comfort. The exterior was made more aerodynamic, and some models could achieve up to 56 combined mpg. Inside, the cabin gained better materials, newer tech, and comfortable front seats, while most examples include a touchscreen infotainment system, a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist.
For buyers, the 2017 Toyota Prius is appealing because it delivers the core Prius strengths in a more refined package than earlier versions. It also benefits from Toyota’s long-standing reputation for durability, and the fourth-generation model is available with all-wheel drive on models from 2019 onward, though that does not apply to the 2017 model year. One drawback is that hybrid components can raise repair costs, and some models lack power. Even so, the 2017 Prius remains a practical choice for shoppers who want a dependable hybrid with strong efficiency and everyday usability.

This car is loaded. Similar to a 2016 Prius four. This car was a great value for what is out there. Gas mileage is great. Love how simple it is to operate. The only thing missing that I wanted was heated seats.

Is the 2017 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its amazing gas mileage, smooth ride, and great value, and many also like the abundance of features. For you, that makes it especially appealing if you want a practical daily commuter with strong efficiency and everyday usability. With 35.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities to find a compelling purchase.
Is the 2017 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, with drivers describing the car as a dependable choice for daily commuting and a vehicle they can count on. That lines up with the model’s reputation for trouble-free ownership and long-term usefulness. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the car’s core appeal and more about making sure the specific example has been maintained well over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Prius?
At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear. Because hybrid components can be costly to repair, you should focus on overall condition and maintenance records before you commit.

What is the 2017 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $16,501 sits slightly above last year's $16,231.
That modest increase suggests the market still values this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The price trend also points to steady demand rather than a sharp drop, which is useful if you plan to sell later. Strong owner satisfaction can help keep interest high when it’s time to move on.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.66% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $15,242, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $16,501 average.
- It offers the familiar Prius formula with a freshened fourth-generation design.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall market signal, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines strong owner satisfaction with solid deal availability. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find a clean example with good maintenance history.
