At 43.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or tracked. Focus on signs of hard use, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and any evidence that the suspension or drivetrain has been stressed beyond normal street driving.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The car comes in just one trim, so the main differences are the available options rather than trim-to-trim equipment gaps. The base setup is intentionally sparse, with no packages or headline features, so you should pay close attention to whether a given car has the added convenience items you want.
• Powertrain: There is just one engine, a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer. The manual gets the extra power tune, and the revised gearing and tuning are aimed at making the car feel more responsive, even if fuel economy suffers a bit.
• Safety package: Standard traction and stability control are included, along with a full suite of airbags and side-curtain bags. The system is tuned to be more permissive, but it still intervenes if things get too out of hand.
• Infotainment: You get a 7-inch touchscreen with a reversing camera, and navigation is available for an extra cost. The car does not include dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, or adaptive cruise.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual returns 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 24 mpg.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota GR86 or consider a different year?

Choose the 2017 if:

• At 43.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.31% compared with last year.

• For 2017, Toyota added some power and revised the steering, suspension, and transmission while also tweaking the looks.

The bottom line: If you want the sharper, updated version of this lightweight sports coupe and you find one in good condition, the 2017 is the right path. If you are especially price-sensitive, you should focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than chasing a specific year, because condition and history matter more than small year-to-year changes.
