CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Summary
With 125 currently listed for sale near Little Rock, AR and an average price of $177,000.00, 20.8% of 2017 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota 4Runner 4.5 / 5 stars.
59.2% of 2017 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a body-on-frame midsize SUV that stayed true to its off-road roots while many rivals moved toward car-based designs. In its generation, Toyota kept the 4Runner focused on durability and capability, and the model’s appeal comes from that combination of rugged construction, strong resale value, and a reputation for reliability. It is also one of the few SUVs in its class that still feels purpose-built for rough terrain rather than softened into a crossover.
For 2017, the 4Runner’s lineup included the SR5, the Trail, and the Limited, with rear-wheel drive standard on the SR5 and Limited and four-wheel drive available. The Trail trim was only available with four-wheel drive. Standard equipment across the generation included power windows and door locks, a multi-information display, and 10 cup holders, while available features included XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, a JBL audio system, leather seats, and heated front seats. The Trail trim added an electronic locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and a Multi-Terrain Select system, which helped reinforce the 4Runner’s off-road identity.
At the same time, the 2017 4Runner was not trying to be the most modern or polished SUV on the road. Its on-road handling is a known weakness, and fuel economy is another drawback. Still, for buyers who value toughness, long-term dependability, and genuine all-terrain ability, the 2017 Toyota 4Runner offers a distinctive mix that few used SUVs can match.

I thought this was a very solid purchase. Ive owned the vehicle for about 5 years and have been happy with the purchase. My only complaint is that I thought the sound system could have been a little better. It was still good but I like to listen to my music loud so it would most likely be satisfactory for most people

4Runner is the last of the real SUV’s….in a world flooded with cutesy crossovers and bloated luxury barges, the 4Runner stands alone as a rugged, do it all vehicle. Simplicity and quality will always outshine “tech” and disposability.

How much does the 2017 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $27,335 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,712.41 |
| Year-Round High | $27,908.32 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,911 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.06% |
Prices have softened 2.06% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,529 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $25,712.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.5/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise its reliability, ruggedness, and long-lasting value, and the 4Runner’s off-road capability stands out if you want an SUV that can handle more than daily commuting. The overview also makes clear that this model fits you best if you value durability and adventure-ready capability over city-friendly manners. With 30.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary repeatedly highlights reliability, ruggedness, and long-lasting value, along with a reputation for solid construction and a trouble-free ownership experience. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on it for extended use if you keep up with maintenance. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying for a vehicle that has been used hard or neglected, so condition matters as much as reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden damage or deferred maintenance. Focus on body condition, signs of off-road wear, and whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently. Because this model is often bought for rugged use, you want proof that the truck has been cared for as carefully as it has been driven.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,529 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,712.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $27,335 sits slightly below last year's $27,911.
That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and still leave room for future value retention. The 4Runner’s strong owner satisfaction and reputation for durability support demand, especially among shoppers who want a capable SUV with a loyal following. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, you’re more likely to preserve value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,302, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $27,335 average.
- It emphasizes off-road capability and ruggedness.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better primary target. If your top priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the more price-sensitive alternative and still keeps you in the 4Runner family.
