CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX

Summary
With 87 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $15,327.00, 9.2% of 2017 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars.
62.1% of 2017 WRX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX stands out as a rally-bred sport compact that pairs a turbocharged Boxer engine with standard all-wheel drive. By this generation, Subaru had moved the WRX onto its own nameplate, and the car’s appeal was rooted in delivering a practical driving experience for enthusiasts rather than just straight-line speed. It also offered more room inside than the previous redesign, along with a stiffer chassis and improved fuel efficiency, which helped broaden its everyday usefulness without losing its performance focus.
For 2017, the WRX’s technology and equipment were a mixed bag. Subaru had already added an upgraded touchscreen that could integrate with a smartphone, and reverse automatic braking was part of the EyeSight package for this model year. At the same time, the car still carried some drawbacks buyers should know about, including outdated technology and poor fuel economy. That balance of engaging handling, standard AWD, and a few age-related compromises is a big part of what makes the 2017 WRX distinctive.
Owners also tend to praise the car’s exciting performance, handling, acceleration, and all-wheel-drive capability, along with its unique styling. Some, however, wish for features like push-to-start and note that the manual shifter can feel rough, while others say it may not be the most comfortable choice for larger occupants.

This car is loads of fun to drive. The handling, the acceleration are awesome. The infotainment system works for me. I like the interface of it. The limited comes with the Nav. System and the upgraded speakers, both of which I enjoy straight away.

Car runs great, turbo really picks up nicely has great power, the premium model had great features. The controls on the steering wheel are well placed great back up camera amazing moon roof and really spacious for a sedan. A little overpriced for the minimal features you get unless you really want to go all out with the more top of the line model but great car overall.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru WRX on May 28, 2021
This is a car not for the economy seeker, but for an enthusiast. It has very respectable performance, is built extremely well and retains its value unlike near all other sport sedans on the market. Plus its lines are just gorgeous ( to me, of course). Seats are meant for narrow hips so anyone above average wont be comfortable, and clutch pretty heavy so bring your NFL kicking leg for any stop and go traffic. Honda type R would probably be the closest competition in my mind, but AWD is the definite deal sealer in my mind, especially with ambitions to move north. This is a super car for its cost. Highly recommended

Is the 2017 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — owners give it 4.67/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise the WRX for its exciting performance, sharp handling, and quick acceleration, and they also like its all-wheel-drive capability and unique styling. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want an enthusiast-focused car that still works as a practical daily driver. With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car people tend to count on for dependable performance, especially when it comes to all-wheel-drive confidence and a trouble-free driving experience. That said, used buyers should still think about long-term ownership risk in the usual way: verify maintenance history and make sure the car has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus your condition check on signs of wear that matter most in a performance car, including drivetrain behavior, clutch feel, and overall maintenance quality.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 595 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,503.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $15,763 sits slightly below last year's $16,305.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the car has a clean history. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers in this segment tend to reward the right combination of performance and practicality.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $14,597, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,763 average.
- It offers a more comfort-oriented take on the WRX formula.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and availability, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still gives you the WRX’s core appeal.
