CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX

Summary
With 96 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,874, 31.3% of 2017 Subaru WRX listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX stands out as a practical sport compact with rally-bred character. It traces its appeal to the formula that made the name famous: a turbocharged Boxer engine, standard all-wheel drive, and a driving experience aimed squarely at enthusiasts. For buyers, that means the WRX delivers the kind of performance and handling that make it feel special without giving up everyday usability.
For 2017, the WRX was still part of the generation that had been redesigned for the 2015 model year. In that era, the car offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine with 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, plus a six-speed manual transmission or an available CVT. It also kept Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and by 2017 reverse automatic braking had been added to Subaru’s EyeSight package. The model’s trim walk gave shoppers a clear spread of equipment, from the Base model’s automatic climate control, seven-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and six-speaker audio to the Limited’s adaptive headlights, power-adjustable driver’s seat, faux leather seats with microsuede inserts, sunroof, and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
The tradeoffs are part of the WRX story as well. The buying guide lists outdated technology, a cramped back seat in older models, and poor fuel economy among its drawbacks, and owner feedback echoes some of that by noting that the manual shifter can feel rough and that the car may not be the most comfortable choice for larger occupants. Even so, the 2017 Subaru WRX remains appealing because it combines strong performance, all-wheel-drive confidence, and a distinctive personality in a package that is still practical enough for daily use.

This car is loads of fun to drive. The handling, the acceleration are awesome. The infotainment system works for me. I like the interface of it. The limited comes with the Nav. System and the upgraded speakers, both of which I enjoy straight away.

Car runs great, turbo really picks up nicely has great power, the premium model had great features. The controls on the steering wheel are well placed great back up camera amazing moon roof and really spacious for a sedan. A little overpriced for the minimal features you get unless you really want to go all out with the more top of the line model but great car overall.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru WRX on May 28, 2021
This is a car not for the economy seeker, but for an enthusiast. It has very respectable performance, is built extremely well and retains its value unlike near all other sport sedans on the market. Plus its lines are just gorgeous ( to me, of course). Seats are meant for narrow hips so anyone above average wont be comfortable, and clutch pretty heavy so bring your NFL kicking leg for any stop and go traffic. Honda type R would probably be the closest competition in my mind, but AWD is the definite deal sealer in my mind, especially with ambitions to move north. This is a super car for its cost. Highly recommended

Owners consistently praise its exciting performance, impressive handling, and all-wheel-drive capability, and they also like its unique styling. For you, that means this model year fits especially well if you want a practical sport compact that still feels engaging in daily driving. With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that people tend to count on for its all-wheel-drive capability and overall driving confidence. That kind of consistency matters if you want a used performance car that still feels dependable over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure prior use and maintenance history match the car’s sporty reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could matter more on a performance-oriented used car.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.

- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.16% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $15,230, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $15,279 sits slightly below last year's $16,111.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you if you buy at the right number. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation when it is time to sell. Demand should stay supported by the model’s enthusiast appeal and broad owner satisfaction.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $14,502, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,279 average.
- It emphasizes strong performance with everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping target, the 2017 is the stronger primary choice because it combines solid owner satisfaction, a meaningful inventory pool, and a softer price trend. If your top priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in strong condition and can live with the older-year tradeoffs.
