CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Pathfinder
overall

Summary
With 810 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,867, 28.0% of 2017 Nissan Pathfinders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
54.9% of 2017 Pathfinder models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder stands out as a family-focused SUV that bridges the gap between minivans and more rugged 4x4s. It is designed to handle family-hauling duty while still offering all-wheel-drive capability when needed, which gives it a broader appeal than a typical people mover. Its car-based platform also helps explain why it emphasizes space and everyday usability rather than old-school truck toughness.
What makes the Pathfinder distinctive is how far it has moved from its earlier, more rugged roots. By 2017, it was part of the fourth generation and had been completely redesigned on a platform shared with the Altima, Quest, Maxima, and others. That change allowed Nissan to maximize interior room, resulting in plenty of cargo and passenger space. For buyers, that combination of comfort, practicality, and available all-wheel drive is the Pathfinder’s main draw.
At the same time, the 2017 Pathfinder is not presented as the most rugged SUV in its class, and that is part of the tradeoff. It is less truck-like than it once was, but it can still do everything that is asked of a family hauler. Owners also tend to praise its comfort, features, spaciousness, smooth performance, and good gas mileage, though some have raised concerns about steering issues and tire wear.

Very well equipped SUV. I love the fact that it has third row seating (that actually seems quite comfortable for short trips). The gas mileage on this is great for an older full-size SUV (25 mpg avg according to tripometer). The SL and Platinum both had leather interior, which is really nice and the seats were very comfortable. A great car for traveling!

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?
Generally — the 4.4/5 user rating and 7.83/10 expert rating point to a well-liked family SUV. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, features, and spaciousness, and they also like the smooth performance and good gas mileage. That lines up with the Pathfinder’s family-hauler mission and its emphasis on everyday usability over truck-like toughness.
The market also shows 30.4% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, with praise centered on comfort, features, spaciousness, and smooth performance. The expert evaluation reinforces that it’s a well-rounded family vehicle, and the cost-effectiveness notes support the idea that it’s built for practical long-term use.
If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is that some examples may have been worked hard as family haulers, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?
At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get serious about any listing, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on the examples that look best on paper. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven tire wear, steering feel, and how well the cabin and cargo area have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S trim gives you the 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth calling, and three-zone automatic climate control. The SV adds smart auto-on headlights, fog lights, remote start, HomeLink, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and reversing backup sensors. The SL adds a 360-degree camera, leather seating and door trim, heated front and rear seats, a blind-spot warning system, and a motion-activated liftgate. The Platinum adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED projector headlights, a panoramic moonroof, navigation with real-time traffic, heated and cooled front seats, a forward-collision-avoidance system, and adaptive cruise control.
- Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. It can switch between 2-wheel drive, Auto, and 4WD modes, and it includes hill-start assist and hill-descent control.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, and those are described as Superior by the IIHS.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen, and higher trims add navigation with real-time traffic and weather. The system uses redundant physical controls, but it does not include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The available all-wheel-drive system can be switched to 2-wheel drive for better fuel economy.
Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the Pathfinder’s core family-hauler strengths without paying for extras. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control, and the basic convenience features that make the SUV easy to live with.
- SV: This is the trim to consider if you want a better everyday experience without jumping too far in price. The added remote start, fog lights, auto-on headlights, leather-wrapped controls, and backup sensors make it feel more complete.
- SL: This is the best-value upgrade for many shoppers because it adds the 360-degree camera, blind-spot warning, heated seats, leather trim, and the motion-activated liftgate. If you want a more premium family SUV without going all the way to the top trim, this is the sweet spot.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it. The panoramic moonroof, navigation, heated and cooled front seats, upgraded lighting, and adaptive cruise control make it the most fully featured version.
The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, where the added driver-assistance features expand beyond the standard equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 840 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,850, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $10,851 sits slightly below last year's $11,524.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you purchase near the lower end of the range and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.
Demand should also stay supported by the Pathfinder’s strong owner satisfaction and family-friendly reputation. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder safe?
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA crash testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Higher trims add more advanced driver assistance, including blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning, forward-collision avoidance, and adaptive cruise control.
The main caveat is that some of the most useful safety tech is not standard on the base trim, so you may need to move up a grade to get the full suite.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Pathfinder pairs a 7.83/10 expert rating with a 9/10 safety score.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,492, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,851 average.
- It is practical and easy to live with.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better target because it combines solid owner satisfaction, strong safety, and a more favorable price trend. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the simpler budget path, but the 2017 gives you a more compelling mix of value and confidence.
