CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Maxima

Summary
With 71 currently listed for sale near Fort Worth, TX and an average price of $11,264, 19.7% of 2017 Nissan Maximas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Maxima 4.45 / 5 stars.
53.5% of 2017 Maxima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Maxima stands out as a stylish, sporty-feeling sedan that still leans into comfort and equipment. Nissan’s eighth-generation Maxima was redesigned for the 2016 model year and revived the “Four-door sports car” label, while also remaining close in size to the Altima and using that car’s platform. For 2017, Apple CarPlay became standard, along with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, which helped make the car feel more modern and better equipped for the money.
It also brings strong performance for a front-wheel-drive sedan. Every version used a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission, and larger sway bars helped improve handling. The Maxima could reach 60 mph in just under six seconds, and it earned “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety every year it was on sale. Buyers looking at a used 2017 model also benefit from the fact that the Maxima’s resale values are relatively low, though the CVT keeps it from feeling as lively as its styling suggests.

My 2017 Nissan Maxima SL is the perfect car for me. Coming from a 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe, I still wanted a vehicle that would accommodate both the sports car and practicality. The features are very similar to my G37 but with some update safety and convenience features. My kids love the panoramic sunroof and I love the performance, while my wife loves the extra space. Though I had a look at all the trim levels, the SL got me the best value. The one thing I would say that I would love to experience would be AWD. Other that I love my “new” car!

Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also highlights dependable everyday use, with praise for the smooth ride, ample features, and enjoyable driving experience. The positive comments suggest you can count on this model year for comfortable, trouble-free ownership if you choose a well-kept example. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the overall reputation and more about finding a car with clean maintenance and condition history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Maxima?
At 47.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, put a pre-purchase inspection at the top of your list, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, maintenance consistency, and signs that the car has been cared for rather than just how it looks in photos.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 822 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.66% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 47.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,826, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $12,908 sits slightly below last year's $14,447.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, that also means resale value may be steadier if you buy well and keep the car in strong condition. A lower current price can reduce your upfront risk, but it also means you should be realistic about how much value the car may retain over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.66% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,312, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $12,908 average.
- It puts styling front and center for buyers who value design first.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped choice with stronger market support, the 2017 is the better starting point. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the more price-sensitive path, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
