CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Maxima

Summary
With 828 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,952, 26.4% of 2017 Nissan Maxima listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Maxima 4.45 / 5 stars.
48.1% of 2017 Nissan Maxima listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Maxima stands out as a stylish, sporty-feeling full-size sedan alternative that leans hard into its “four-door sports car” image. It uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, and Nissan pairs that with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission. The result is a car that can scoot to 60 mph in just under six seconds and corners well, even if the CVT blunts some of the response and keeps it from feeling as lively as its looks suggest.
It also brings a strong mix of standard equipment and safety tech. An 8-inch color display with navigation is included across the range, and the top three trims get adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and rear cross-traffic alert as standard equipment. For 2017, Apple CarPlay became standard, along with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, which makes this model year especially appealing for buyers who want a well-equipped sedan without moving into luxury-brand territory.
At the same time, the 2017 Maxima is not the roomiest choice in its class. It is still smaller than true full-size sedans, and its back seat and trunk are described as smallish. Even so, its combination of sharp styling, strong standard features, and solid safety credentials gives it broad appeal, especially for shoppers who want a comfortable daily driver with a more upscale personality than many mainstream sedans.

My 2017 Nissan Maxima SL is the perfect car for me. Coming from a 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe, I still wanted a vehicle that would accommodate both the sports car and practicality. The features are very similar to my G37 but with some update safety and convenience features. My kids love the panoramic sunroof and I love the performance, while my wife loves the extra space. Though I had a look at all the trim levels, the SL got me the best value. The one thing I would say that I would love to experience would be AWD. Other that I love my “new” car!

Owners consistently praise the stylish design, the blend of luxury and sportiness, and the enjoyable performance, while also noting the smooth ride and ample features. For you, that means this model year fits best if you want a comfortable daily driver with a more upscale personality than many mainstream sedans. With 27.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful shopping opportunity.
Is the 2017 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that many drivers find dependable, trouble-free, and easy to live with over the long term. That kind of sentiment matters if you want a used sedan you can count on for regular commuting and everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying too much for a car whose condition does not match its asking price.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Maxima?
At 48.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, and you should prioritize any listing with a clean record and consistent service history. A pre-purchase inspection is worth it, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on overall condition, because accident history and repair quality can affect both ownership confidence and future resale.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Maxima?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best examples.
- Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 832 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 48.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,830, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $12,924 sits slightly below last year's $14,257.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend means you should be realistic about depreciation and avoid overpaying now. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 48.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $11,793, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $12,924 average.
- It emphasizes styling as the main draw.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better primary choice if you want the stronger overall value proposition, especially with softer pricing and solid owner satisfaction. If you are more price-sensitive and can accept an older model year, the 2016 is the secondary path to consider.
