CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 165 currently listed for sale near West Palm Beach, FL and an average price of $45,639.00, 26.1% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.9 / 5 stars.
58.8% of 2017 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits at the center of Mercedes-Benz’s flagship tradition: a large luxury car built to showcase the brand’s best technology, craftsmanship, and safety. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car the second generation of its MBUX infotainment interface, and buyers could opt for up to five screens on board. Mercedes also said there was a new 3D driver display system that uses eye tracking to create the illusion of depth. That emphasis on advanced features is part of what makes the S-Class distinctive, and it helps explain why the model has long been regarded as a benchmark in its class.
For 2017, the W222 series received a facelift and tech update, and the engines were updated for 2018. The W222 also brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that significantly cut weight and improved rigidity, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering. Its interior used wood and metal accents, selectable ambient lighting, and a pair of giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. That mix of luxury and usability gives the car broad appeal, especially for buyers who want a cabin that feels both opulent and thoughtfully engineered.
There are tradeoffs, though. The S-Class is expensive to buy new, and it is costly to fuel, maintain, and insure over time. Even so, the W222 has a very good reliability record, and owner reports often describe an easy ownership experience with high satisfaction. For shoppers drawn to a used luxury sedan that combines comfort, technology, and strong long-term appeal, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class remains a compelling choice.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary describes it as dependable and highlights the smooth, trouble-free feel that many owners appreciate over time. That lines up with the model’s reputation for strong long-term appeal, especially if you value a luxury car that feels composed and reassuring to live with.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about day-to-day satisfaction and more about making sure the specific car has been maintained carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury sedan where repair costs can escalate quickly if something has been overlooked. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and how well the car’s high-end features and comfort systems are working.

What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,327 sits slightly below last year's $40,190.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently if you plan to own the car for a while. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been cared for. A well-kept example should still attract interest because shoppers in this segment tend to respond to strong luxury, comfort, and reputation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of value, owner satisfaction, and current market softness, the 2017 is the primary year to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can widen your search to nearby years, but you should still prioritize condition and history over small differences in asking price.
