Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits in a generation that Mercedes used to showcase its newest technology and engineering. The W222 series brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and Mercedes said the car was the first in the world to exclusively feature LEDs over traditional bulbs, with 500 light units throughout the interior and exterior. It also introduced “magic body control,” which used an advanced road-scanning system to detect potholes and imperfections in advance and adapt the suspension to them, along with a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors for smoother adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
For 2017, the W222 received a facelift and tech update, and the cabin remained one of its biggest strengths. Mercedes’ MBUX digital interface and infotainment system featured on two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel, while many physical controls were retained. The car also offered selectable ambient lighting, and many versions were available with luxury and convenience features such as rear executive seating packages, sport packages, AMG appearance packages, air purifiers, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio. Buyers looking at this model year get the appeal of a deeply engineered flagship with a very strong reliability record for the generation, though it is still expensive to maintain and can be costly to repair if something goes wrong.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

How much does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $38,807 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,485.60 |
| Year-Round High | $40,720.97 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $40,563 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.33% |
Prices have softened 4.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 738 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $38,485.60, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its elegant design, driving experience, performance, safety, and comfort, and they also describe it as luxurious and dependable. For you, that makes it especially appealing if you want a full-size luxury sedan that prioritizes refinement, technology, and a premium cabin experience. With 32.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights it as reliable, dependable, and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over time, with comments that point to an easy ownership experience and strong long-term appeal. That said, used luxury ownership still carries risk if maintenance history is incomplete, so you should favor well-documented examples and budget carefully for upkeep.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows luxury sedans well. Focus on condition details that matter most on a high-end car: signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, electronics behavior, and evidence that maintenance has been kept up consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 738 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.33% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,485.60, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,807 sits slightly below last year's $40,563.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now but may also mean future resale gains are limited if the broader trend continues. For you as a seller, the key is to protect value with strong condition, complete service records, and a clean history, since those factors matter more when the market is already softening.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the strongest mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current market flexibility, the 2017 is the primary year to focus on. If you're especially price-sensitive, you can widen your search to nearby years, but the 2017 already gives you a favorable combination of softened pricing and strong owner approval, so it makes sense to start here and only move on if the specific cars you find have condition or history issues.
