Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury car that blends advanced technology, refined engineering, and a deeply opulent cabin. In the W222 generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity, and the model also featured selectable ambient lighting, a digital instrument cluster, and a thoroughly updated COMAND system with two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel. It was also loaded with the kind of comfort and convenience features that define the S-Class name, including rear executive seating packages, active parking assist, massaging seats, and Burmester surround-sound audio.
For 2017, the W222 received a facelift and tech update, which helped keep it feeling current in a segment where presentation matters as much as performance. The lineup for this year included the S 550 with a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 making 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and the AMG S 63 with a hand-built 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 making 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet. That combination of strong engines, rich materials, and a long list of available technology makes the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class especially appealing to buyers who want a flagship sedan that feels both fast and exceptionally well appointed.
At the same time, this is not a car that makes sense as a bargain. The S-Class is expensive to buy and costly to maintain, and many of its best features were optional rather than standard. Even so, its reputation for luxury, safety, and high-end engineering is a major part of its appeal, and the 2017 model captures that formula well.

The car has every option I was looking for even the omission of HUD. I think at its original price point it is a great value. The car has a color that I have yet to figure out but other than that Im totally satisfied with my purchase. I had a Porsche Panamera 4S but Im getting older and more mature plus everyone should own an S Class once in life.

How much does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $38,789 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,288 |
| Year-Round High | $40,591 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $40,085 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.23% |
Prices have softened 3.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 718 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.9/5 user rating points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its elegant design, driving experience, performance, safety, and comfort, and they also describe it as luxurious and dependable. For you, that means this model fits especially well if you want a full-size luxury car that emphasizes refinement, technology, and a high-end cabin experience. With 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also describes it as dependable and trouble-free, with praise centered on its smooth handling and strong performance. That combination suggests you may be looking at a used luxury sedan that can reward careful ownership over the long term.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on condition, repair quality, and signs of deferred maintenance. Because this is a high-end luxury sedan, you should pay close attention to how well the car has been maintained and whether everything works as intended.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 718 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,288, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $38,789 sits slightly below last year's $40,085.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against a seller trying to maximize short-term value. Even so, a well-kept example with strong presentation and complete records should still attract interest from shoppers who want a flagship luxury sedan. If you buy carefully and maintain it well, you can help protect more of its value when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want the strongest mix of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and market availability, the 2017 is the primary year to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years to see whether a lower entry price outweighs the 2017's stronger satisfaction and market position.
