What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 52.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint match, and signs of prior repair. Because this car is often chosen for its driving feel and feature content, you should also focus on how the cabin, electronics, and safety equipment have aged. If a listing has accident history, condition and repair quality matter even more.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport includes daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Touring adds 18-inch wheels, automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat with lumbar, heated front seats, leather-wrapped controls, leatherette sport seats, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds the more powerful engine, LED fog lights, a rear spoiler, a moonroof, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, and upgraded audio and display tech.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Skyactiv-G with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque in the Grand Touring. Both engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and the car is front-wheel drive only.
• Safety package: Touring and Grand Touring trims include advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support. Base Sport does not include those added driver-assistance features.
• Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch full-color touchscreen, Mazda Connect, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SiriusXM with a 4-month trial, two USB ports, and steering-wheel audio controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual, or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the automatic can reach 28/37 with the i-ELOOP package.

Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get the stylish cabin, Mazda Connect, and the full set of basic safety equipment, so it makes sense if you care more about driving feel and price than extra comfort features.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features many buyers will actually notice every day, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, and the added safety tech. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the stronger 2.5-liter engine and the most upscale equipment in the lineup. It brings the most premium feel, along with the upgraded audio system and head-up display, so it suits you best if you want the most complete Mazda3 experience.

Touring and Grand Touring are the trims with the added safety package features.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $13,432 sits slightly above last year's $12,693.

That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The combination of strong owner satisfaction, appealing design, and good fuel economy helps keep buyer interest steady. If you maintain the car well and avoid accident history, you should have a better shot at holding value than with a less desirable compact car.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 5.82% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda added G-Vectoring Control and refreshed the design, which sharpened the car’s appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,116, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,432 average.
• It emphasizes driving feel and value, but the cabin is small even for a compact car.

The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped, refreshed version with strong owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you can live with a smaller cabin, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly alternative.
