Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Yes — 4.83/5 from owners, which is a strong signal that you’re looking at a well-liked used compact car. The expert rating is 8.5/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its sporty feel, responsive acceleration, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. The overview also points to a car that blends a polished cabin with an engaging driving character, which makes it appealing if you want a compact car that feels more upscale and more fun than the average commuter.

With 35.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free enough to recommend, especially if you value a sporty compact that can be counted on day to day.

The expert driving notes reinforce that impression by describing a composed, secure car that stays planted in corners, brakes cleanly, and remains calm on the highway. The cost-effectiveness notes also help, since the car’s fuel economy and warranty coverage support lower-stress ownership.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the car’s basic character and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, repair quality, and signs of inconsistent wear. Because this car is often bought for its driving feel and feature content, it’s worth checking that the cabin electronics, safety systems, and interior trim all work as expected. If you’re comparing multiple listings, prioritize the cleanest example over the cheapest one.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport is well equipped with daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and Mazda Connect, while Touring adds heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and more safety tech. Grand Touring brings the more powerful engine, LED fog lights, a moonroof, and upgraded audio and display features.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque in the lower trims, while Grand Touring uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Both engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, and the smaller engine returns up to 37 mpg highway while the larger engine trades some efficiency for stronger performance.
• Safety package: Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda’s automatic emergency braking system. The base trim does not include that full suite.
• Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch full-color touchscreen, Mazda Connect, Bluetooth, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SiriusXM, and two USB ports. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual, or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the automatic can be improved to 28/37 with the i-ELOOP package.

Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get the 2.0-liter engine, Mazda Connect, and a solid list of standard safety and convenience features, so it’s the trim to target if you care most about price and driving feel.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features many buyers will actually notice every day, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, and the upgraded safety package. It’s the sweet spot if you want more comfort and confidence without jumping to the top trim.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the stronger 2.5-liter engine and the most upscale equipment, including the moonroof, Bose audio, and full-color active driving display. It’s the right pick if you want the most premium-feeling Mazda3 and are willing to pay for it.

Touring and Grand Touring are the trims with the added blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $13,426 sits slightly above last year's $12,914.

The combination of steady demand and a relatively tight price range can help support values, especially for cleaner examples with good equipment and a strong service history.

If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you’re more likely to preserve value than if you choose a rougher, higher-mileage example. Strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 3.97% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 refresh added G-Vectoring Control and updated styling, which sharpened the car’s driving feel and appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,135, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,426 average.
• It emphasizes driving enjoyment and value, especially if interior space is not a priority.

The bottom line: Choose the 2017 if you want the better-rounded version with the refresh, stronger feature appeal, and a still-reasonable market price. If your priority is saving money above all else, the 2016 can be the smarter buy, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
