What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the accident-free share is only a little over half, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone. It’s also smart to verify that the car’s equipment and safety features match the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport is well equipped with daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Touring adds 18-inch wheels, automatic on/off headlights, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped controls, leatherette sport seats, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds the more powerful 2.5-liter engine, LED fog lights, a rear decklid spoiler, a moonroof, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, Bose audio, SiriusXM, and a full-color active driving display.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp in the base car and a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp in the Grand Touring. Both engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and the more powerful engine trades a bit of efficiency for stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda’s automatic emergency braking system.
• Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, SiriusXM, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, two USB ports, and steering-wheel audio controls. Android Auto and Apple Car Play are not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual, or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the available i-ELOOP package can improve the automatic to 28/37.

Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths at the lowest price. It already gives you the stylish cabin, the 2.0-liter engine, and the main convenience and safety basics, so it makes sense if you care most about driving feel and affordability.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features many buyers will actually notice every day, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, and the safety upgrades. It’s the sweet spot if you want a more complete car without jumping to the top trim.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest engine and the most upscale equipment. It adds the 2.5-liter engine, Bose audio, a moonroof, leather-trimmed sport seats, and the active driving display, so it suits you best if you want the most premium Mazda3 experience.

Touring and Grand Touring are the trims with the added safety package, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you should shop carefully and move quickly when you find a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 705 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 6.13% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 52.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,916, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $13,430 sits slightly above last year's $12,654.

That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A car that has already shown price resilience can be easier to move when demand is steady. The current inventory also suggests buyers still have options, so condition and trim will matter when you eventually list yours.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 has not been fully rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but it has received five-star side crash and four-star rollover ratings.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, which is Mazda’s automatic emergency braking system.

One caveat is that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had not yet tested this model year, so you’re leaning partly on prior-year results and the car’s standard equipment rather than a full current-year crash-test record.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 6.13% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 refresh added G-Vectoring Control and updated styling, which sharpened the car’s appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,122, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,430 average.
• It emphasizes driving enjoyment and value, especially if interior space is not a priority.

The bottom line: Buy the 2017 if you want the refreshed styling, stronger feature set, and a well-liked ownership experience. If your budget is tighter and you’re comfortable giving up the update, the 2016 can still make sense as the lower-cost path.
