CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 1,781 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,120, 31.7% of 2017 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
61.1% of 2017 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming for a sporty, upscale feel rather than trying to appeal to every compact crossover shopper. In a crowded segment with very different personalities, it is presented as the fun-to-drive choice that also feels uniquely refined for its class. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a commuter with more space but do not want something bland or purely utilitarian.
Its strengths are clear in the way it balances driving enjoyment with a more premium character. The CX-5 is described as not only fun to drive, but also uniquely upscale in the segment, which gives it a distinct identity among mainstream crossovers. Owners also praise its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, and fuel economy, especially on long trips.
There are tradeoffs, though. Some drivers wished for more power and cargo space, which suggests the CX-5’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who value personality and refinement over maximum practicality.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

| Year-Round Low | $15,193 |
| Year-Round High | $16,549 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,533 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.46% |

There are 1,791 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its stylish design, smooth ride, and comfortable handling, and they also highlight its fuel economy on long trips. The CX-5’s appeal is strongest if you want a commuter with more space that still feels refined and fun to drive rather than purely utilitarian.
There are 32.3% good or great deals in the market, which suggests you can still find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to excellent reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing it as dependable over the long term. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by presenting the CX-5 as a well-rounded compact crossover that balances everyday use with engaging driving manners.
The available maintenance and ownership details do not point to any major red flags, but you should still expect the usual used-car wear items to matter more than headline mileage alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you are considering a higher-trim example with more equipment to check. Focus on overall condition, since the CX-5’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and how cleanly its features still operate.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim gives you 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a reversing camera, keyless entry, push-button start, dual USB ports, MazdaConnect infotainment, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Touring adds leatherette seating, auto-leveling headlights, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear climate vents, and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. Grand Touring adds 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, full leather seating, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose premium stereo.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, and Smart City Brake Support. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The higher-level safety features are not standard on the lower trims.
- Infotainment: MazdaConnect uses a 7-inch screen controlled by a rotary dial, and the screen becomes a touchscreen when the CX-5 is in Park. It does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined, while AWD versions return 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined.
Which 2017 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest entry price. You still get the key safety and convenience basics, plus MazdaConnect and a reversing camera, but you give up the nicer cabin materials and extra driver-assistance features found higher up.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades that make daily use feel more premium, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, leatherette seating, and blind-spot monitoring.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience, with leather seating, navigation, a Bose stereo, a power liftgate, adaptive headlights, and the full set of available driver-assistance features.
The safety package expands as you move up the range, with the most advanced driver-assistance features reserved for the Grand Touring trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop but still need to move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,791 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.46% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,193, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,126 sits slightly below last year's $16,533.
That kind of price movement suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you are thinking about short-term resale. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should be better positioned to preserve value than someone who overpays now.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS when equipped with automatic emergency braking.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, and Smart City Brake Support, which can pre-charge the brakes and even apply them automatically at low speeds if needed. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.
The main safety caveat is that the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard across the lineup, so you need to shop carefully if those systems matter to you.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 adds a more upscale cabin feel and available advanced safety tech.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,746, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,126 average.
- It pushes the CX-5 further toward premium territory.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2017 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, solid safety, and a softer market price. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year and a more premium-leaning presentation, the 2018 is the alternative to compare.
