CarGurus Analysis: 2017 MINI Cooper

Summary
With 373 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,674.00, 34.9% of 2017 MINI Coopers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 MINI Cooper 4.75 / 5 stars.
62.7% of 2017 MINI Cooper models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 MINI Cooper stands out because it blends premium-feeling style with the playful character that has long defined the nameplate. It is still a small car, but it is also a fun one, with go-kart-like handling and the brand’s trademark British style. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something more distinctive than an ordinary commuter car, especially if they value sharp responses and a lively driving feel.
For 2017, the standard engine is a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder that makes 134 horsepower. The Cooper S is the quicker choice, with 189 horsepower, and MINI also offered serious John Cooper Works versions with up to 302 turbocharged horsepower. The car’s cabin adds to its personality with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen surrounded by a light ring that changes colors with drive modes, and it offers Apple CarPlay, navigation, and other features, though those were added-cost options. Android Auto is not available at all.
Practicality is the main tradeoff. The third-generation MINI Cooper is larger than the second-generation model, and it offers a four-door variant, but the back seats are still tight in both body styles. Cargo space is also restricted, especially in the Convertible. Even so, for shoppers who want a compact car with style, strong personality, and a genuinely entertaining drive, the 2017 MINI Cooper has a clear appeal.

Nice little run around car with plenty of zip and fun to drive. I’ve only had it a week but everything seems fine and in good shape. 38 mpg on the hwy at 70 -75 mph. Love it so far!

This car is outstanding. Most fun I have ever had driving. So responsive, tight ride...almost drives itself. Like a racehorse who just wants to run. Sporty, expensive exterior, sleek interior. great sound system. Recommend without reservation. Compared to my 2012 Mini- there is no comparison. Rides and feels like a much more expensive car.

A well put together little car. Fantastic handling, it grips the road like it owes it money. Economical to run around in and when it’s time to play, the sport mode stiffens up the suspension, steering and throttle response for a good supply of adrenaline! A mini is one of the best inventions I’ve come across.

How much does the 2017 MINI Cooper cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,704 |
| Year-Round Low | $12,413.57 |
| Year-Round High | $14,146.55 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,152 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.23% |
Prices have softened 10.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 382 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $12,413.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 MINI Cooper a good car?
Yes — the 2017 MINI Cooper earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, sporty handling, and fuel efficiency, and many also like its quick responsiveness and unique styling. That makes it a strong fit if you want a small car with personality and a lively feel rather than a plain commuter. With 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 MINI Cooper reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the car’s fun, responsive character over time. The same reviews suggest it can be a trouble-free choice for buyers who value a small car they can count on, though some owners mention minor cosmetic issues. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is buying a car with hidden wear or neglected maintenance, so condition matters as much as the badge.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of cosmetic damage, uneven panel gaps, or other condition issues that could affect value. Because this model is compact and style-driven, you should focus on overall condition and maintenance history as much as mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 MINI Cooper?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 382 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,413.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 MINI Cooper's resale value?
The current average of $12,704 sits slightly below last year's $14,152.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays under pressure. If you plan to sell later, the best examples will be the ones that stay attractive to shoppers through strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 MINI Cooper or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the primary year to target, especially if you can find a clean, well-kept example near the low end of the price range. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market to negotiate harder and focus on the best-maintained listings rather than chasing the cheapest one.
