Is the 2017 Kia Sportage a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Kia Sportage earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfort, handling, and features, especially the panoramic sunroof and safety technology. They also call out its good value and reliability compared with other brands. That lines up well with the Sportage’s use case as a compact crossover that aims to be practical without feeling plain, with available all-wheel drive, a spacious interior, and a sporty ride.

With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to make this a worthwhile model to shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Kia Sportage reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to reliability as one of the Sportage’s strengths, with many shoppers appreciating its dependable feel and value compared with other brands. The expert evaluation also emphasizes solid value and a well-rounded ownership experience, which supports the idea that this is a crossover you can count on for everyday use.

Kia’s long warranty coverage adds another layer of confidence for used buyers, but you should still budget for age-related wear and verify maintenance history before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sportage?

At 62.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment and safety features work as expected. Because this model year has a meaningful accident history in the market, condition and documentation matter more than usual.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is the most basic version, while the EX adds more convenience and tech, and the SX Turbo brings the most performance and equipment. The base trim misses out on some of the higher-tech safety content, so you should pay close attention to feature gaps if you want more than the essentials.
• Powertrain: The base and midrange trims use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 181 horsepower, while the SX Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 240 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form and 237 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The base engine is described as lackluster off the line, while the turbo is quick.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning and avoidance. The base model cannot be equipped with the high-tech safety content, and adaptive cruise control is not available.
• Infotainment: The base touchscreen is 5 inches, with 7- and 8-inch screens available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the LX and standard on the EX and SX Turbo.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway with front-wheel drive, or 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. The turbo engine is rated at 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway with front-wheel drive, or 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway with all-wheel drive.

Which 2017 Kia Sportage trim should I buy?

The 2017 Kia Sportage is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, EX, SX Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Sportage experience at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the styling, space, and basic tech without paying for extras, but you should know that the base model misses out on some of the higher-end safety content.
• EX: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more convenience and tech while staying below the top trim. It also gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, which makes it the most balanced pick if you want a nicer daily driver without jumping to the turbo model.
• SX Turbo: This is the trim to choose if you want the strongest performance and the most equipment. The turbocharged engine is quick, and this version also includes paddle shifters and the most upscale feature set.

The safety package is not available on the base model, so if driver-assistance features matter to you, shop above the LX.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sportage?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,046 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.78% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,003, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Kia Sportage's resale value?

The current average of $11,003 sits slightly below last year's $11,435.

That softer pricing suggests the Sportage is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can work against future resale if you overpay today. On the other hand, a lower entry price can help you preserve value better over your ownership period because you’re starting from a more favorable baseline.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Kia Sportage safe?

The 2017 Kia Sportage is an IIHS 2017 Top Safety Pick. It earns the best score of Good in all phases of crash testing, and its crash-avoidance tech earns the best score of Superior. It earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and LATCH child-seat anchors. Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning and avoidance. The main caveats are that adaptive cruise control is not available and the base model cannot be equipped with the high-tech safety content.

Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sportage or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.78% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its bold styling, sporty ride, solid value, and strong safety reputation.

The bottom line: If you want a used Sportage with a strong mix of value, safety, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a solid target year. If your priority is finding the lowest possible price, you can also shop nearby years, but the 2017 gives you a compelling balance of features and market pricing.
