Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul corners the market on boxy hatchbacks, and that shape remains its defining trait. It is still the quirkiest option in its price range, which gives it a clear personality that helps it stand out from more conventional small cars. The 2017 Kia Soul also returns with an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, giving buyers a little more to consider beyond its distinctive styling.
At the same time, the 2017 Kia Soul is described as decidedly average when it comes to performance and features. It stands out for its looks, but not for its value, so its appeal is less about being the most compelling all-around bargain and more about offering a memorable design with some added equipment. Owner feedback reinforces that balance, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features, alongside complaints about missing armrests and a media interface that could be better.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, good fuel economy, and comfortable ride. They also like the spacious interior and modern features, which fits the Soul’s role as a quirky small car that gives you more personality than a typical commuter hatchback.
The overview also frames it as a practical, distinctive choice with updated looks and new technology, so if you want something that stands out without giving up everyday usability, it makes sense to consider. With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, and spacious interior. That kind of feedback usually matters more than a single feature list because it reflects how the car holds up in regular ownership.
The expert review also describes the Soul as a practical, easy-to-live-with car rather than a high-strung machine, which supports the idea that it should be straightforward to own. The available telematics system can also remind you when service is due and let you schedule maintenance from the dashboard, which adds a little convenience to long-term upkeep.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about drama and more about finding a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history will matter more than the model’s basic concept.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?
At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim level being advertised. Because the Soul’s appeal is tied to its features and usability, you’ll want to make sure the cabin, electronics, and safety equipment are all working as expected.

- Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Plus adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The interior is described as sleek and straightforward, with improved fit and finish, but the optional leather-trimmed seats are the comfort upgrade called out most clearly.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder at the base level, a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder in the Plus, and a turbocharged version of the entry-level engine that raises output to 201 horsepower. The turbo adds useful passing and merging power, but the car is still tuned more for everyday practicality than sporty driving.
- Safety package: The Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, which keeps it from earning top IIHS honors. A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, but semi-autonomous features like active cruise control and active lane assist are not available.
- Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics system. That setup can remember where you parked, tell you if service is due, and let you schedule service from the dashboard.
- Fuel efficiency: The owner feedback highlights good fuel economy, while the expert review says the turbocharged engine can be more power than the car really needs for everyday use. If efficiency matters most to you, that makes the non-turbo setup the safer bet.
Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: Soul, Soul +, and !.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The base Soul is the most stripped-down choice, with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp engine. It also misses out on the more appealing tech and safety upgrades, so it makes the most sense only if you want the lowest entry price.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Soul + is the best value if you want a stronger engine and access to the option packages that unlock the features most shoppers will care about. It is the trim that makes the Soul feel more complete without jumping all the way to the turbo model.
- Premium/top trim: The ! trim brings the turbocharged engine and the most power in the lineup, along with the most upscale feel of the group. It is the right pick if you want the strongest performance and are willing to pay more for it.
- Off-road trim: The turbo model can feel like more power than the chassis needs for everyday driving, so it is not the most natural choice if you just want a calm commuter.
The safety package still falls short of top-tier active safety coverage because automatic emergency braking is not available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you focus on condition and price.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,270 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.68% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,136.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,252 sits slightly below last year's $9,506.
That softer pricing suggests the Soul is still accessible on the used market, which can help future resale by keeping it within reach of budget-minded shoppers. At the same time, the current trend shows that values have eased, so a seller should expect more competition from similarly priced listings.
The Soul’s appeal is still supported by its distinctive styling, roomy cabin, and strong owner satisfaction. Those traits can help keep demand steady, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?
The 2017 Kia Soul earns Good ratings from the IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA for head-on and side-impact collisions, plus four-star ratings on NHTSA’s rollover test.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Soul’s safety story is mixed: crash performance is solid, but active safety is where it falls behind. It lacks automatic emergency braking, which is a key reason it does not earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ badge. A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, but those features are not enough to fully close the gap with newer rivals that offer more standard driver assistance.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.68% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Soul stands out for its updated looks, optional turbocharged engine, and new technology, even though it remains more about personality than class-leading value.
The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s quirky styling, roomy cabin, and updated tech, the 2017 model is a sensible target as long as you verify history and condition carefully. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
