CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda HR-V

Summary
With 51 currently listed for sale near Orlando, FL and an average price of $13,248, 29.4% of 2017 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda HR-V 4.4 / 5 stars.
100.0% of 2017 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact crossover that blends SUV versatility with the footprint of a small car. It uses a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder powertrain with 141hp and a CVT automatic transmission designed more for fuel economy than performance, and front-wheel drive models were also available with a six-speed manual transmission. Honda’s Magic Seat system is one of its defining features, giving the rear seats multiple folding configurations for different cargo and seating needs, and the cargo area measures 58.8 cubic feet.
For 2017, the HR-V’s appeal is rooted in its usefulness and value rather than outright speed. The model’s reputation for reliability is a major draw, and owners often praise its smooth driving experience and value for money. At the same time, this early version is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system was clunky in early cars, and some owners reported transmission concerns, especially when accelerating hard. That makes the 2017 HR-V a sensible choice for buyers who want a versatile, efficient crossover with a clever interior, as long as they are comfortable with its modest performance and dated tech.

This could be a great value but this model has transmission issues and I was told it wouldn’t be covered because of the salvage title.

I love my Honda and it is a great value. My car is only missing air/heat vents in the back on the vehicle.

I love this car and ended up buying it because of it being such a smooth vehicle to drive with touch screen controls, heated seats, and a sunroof. Over all just a nice, clean, little SUV!

There is no extra storage space. Given the fact that it is the smallest of the SUV lineup for Honda but top of the line in the package, I guess I expected more.

Owners repeatedly praise its smooth driving experience, value for money, and useful features like the touch screen controls, heated seats, and sunroof. The HR-V’s practical use case also comes through clearly: you’re getting a subcompact crossover that emphasizes versatility, city-friendly size, and everyday usefulness over outright performance. With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also leans toward reliability and dependable day-to-day use, with many drivers describing the HR-V as a trouble-free, long-term companion. At the same time, some owners reported transmission concerns, so used buyers should pay close attention to service history and how the vehicle drives under load. For long-term ownership, that means the safest path is a well-documented example with no signs of drivetrain hesitation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
At 57% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of transmission issues or uneven wear that could point to harder use. You should also focus on overall condition and maintenance records, since a well-kept HR-V is the best way to reduce surprises later.

What is the 2017 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $15,006 sits slightly above last year's $14,638.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to resell later. The HR-V’s practical appeal and steady owner satisfaction help support demand, especially for clean, well-maintained examples. If you buy carefully now, you’re more likely to own a vehicle that stays attractive to future shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.51% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,853, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,006 average.
- It offers value, smooth driving, and a spacious feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,069, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $15,006 average.
- It adds higher ground clearance and a more premium cabin.
The bottom line: The 2017 makes sense if you want a practical, well-liked HR-V with strong owner satisfaction and a reasonable market position. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling package, the 2018 is the natural step up.
