Overview

Known in other parts of the world as the Carnival, the Sedona has been Kia’s offering in the minivan segment since the late 1990s and has steadily improved to the point that it’s now a viable competitor to Japanese peers like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, as well as domestic favorites like the Dodge Grand Caravan. The third-generation Sedona only just came out for the 2015 model year, so the 2017 model remains largely unchanged. Available trims include the EX, L, LX, LX Plus, Limited, and SX, and you can spend anywhere from $27,000 for a base Sedona all the way up to 40 grand for a loaded SX.
The 2017 Kia Sedona comes with a single drivetrain, since most minivan buyers are more concerned with what’s happening in the passenger area than under the hood. The engine is a 3.3-liter V6 taken from the Sorento crossover and the Cadenza sedan, making 276 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The Sedona is front-wheel-drive only and the sole transmission is a 6-speed automatic. The power is adequate for the 4,414-pound minivan, but the Sedona won’t be winning any drag races. It's also rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, but adding a full load of cargo and passengers on top of that will probably make it hard for the Sedona to get out of its own way. Fuel economy is an unremarkable 18 mpg city/25 highway.
The Sedona has a strut suspension in front and a multilink suspension in the rear; higher trim levels have electric power steering, while lower trims make do with hydraulic steering. Base trims come with fairly basic 17-inch wheels, but some of the higher trims get flashier rims or even 19-inchers.
A minivan is all about what’s going on inside, whether it’s keeping passengers entertained or packing a vacation’s worth of luggage and gear. The Sedona is reportedly extremely quiet on the road, thanks to Kia’s dedication to sound deadening. Seating is of course ample, with room for up to eight people, although the third-row seats are fairly small for a minivan and probably best reserved for the youngest children. Many versions have “Slide-n-Stow” seating, with which the middle-row seats can slide forward and flip up onto their bottom cushions. The SX-L Sedona has lounge seating with leg rests and nicer headrests. Third-row seats split 60/40 and fold flat into the floor.
The Sedona isn’t the roomiest minivan on the market, especially compared to the aforementioned Odyssey and Sienna, but it does have lots of handy storage for smaller items, including a very big front center console, as well as storage bins near the doors and the dashboard. There are also several USB ports and higher trims get 115-volt outlets.
As for what standard features, the base L includes power windows, power locks and power mirrors, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, air conditioning, and steering-wheel controls. The LX adds second-row bench seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, smartphone connectivity, privacy glass, heated front seats, a cooled glove box, and roof rails. The EX adds standard power-sliding doors, a power tailgate, leather upholstery and steering wheel, fog lights, keyless ignition, and heated mirrors. The loaded SX, meanwhile, comes with second-row lounge seating, 8-speaker audio, ventilated front seats, navigation, LED taillights, a wood-wrapped steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. The infotainment system in the Sedona runs off your smartphone rather than through the vehicle itself.
Safety is a priority for family vehicles, and the 2017 Kia Sedona comes standard with brake assist and hill-start assist, in addition to cornering brake control and rollover mitigation. It has received a 5-star crash rating in federal testing and top Good scores all around from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, enough for a Top Safety Pick distinction. The Sedona comes standard with a rear-view camera, and the SX Limited gets a surround-view camera for a 360-degree view while parking.
As is the case with pickup trucks these days, it’s surprising how much money you can spend on a minivan, especially when it has a Kia badge up front. Up to 40 grand for a loaded flagship trim seems like a lot of money, and it is; but when you consider the sheer mass of a vehicle like this and all the convenience features it comes with, the price tag doesn’t seem like such a bad value after all. Crossovers have taken a lot of customers away from minivans over the years, but the unbeatable interior volume of a minivan means it will always have an appeal, and the third-generation Sedona is as good a choice as any among the people carriers on sale today.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sedona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,018 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,408.44 |
| Year-Round High | $11,080.29 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,323 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.95% |
Prices have softened 2.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 302 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $9,408.44, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Kia Sedona a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating suggests you can feel confident considering it as a used minivan.
That kind of score points to strong owner satisfaction, which matters when you're trying to balance family utility, comfort, and everyday livability.
With 28.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2017 Kia Sedona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
For used buyers, that kind of owner feedback suggests the bigger ownership risk is less about broad reputation and more about finding a well-kept example with clean maintenance and accident history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sedona?
At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you get serious about any listing, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on the best-priced examples. Focus closely on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle's wear matches its mileage and asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sedona?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 302 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.0% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2017 Kia Sedona's resale value?
The current average of $10,018 sits slightly below last year's $10,323.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you're planning to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you'll be in a better position when it's time to sell. Demand should remain steadier for well-kept examples than for higher-mileage or accident-history listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sedona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,754, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,018 average.
- The 2016 blends minivan utility with a more distinctive, upscale feel.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model year with a solid market position and decent deal availability, the 2017 is the better starting point. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and may be worth a close look before you decide.
