CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Niro
overall

Summary
With 113 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,313, 36.3% of 2017 Kia Niros for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Niro 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
63.7% of 2017 Niro models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Niro stands out by trying to make a hybrid feel less like a compromise. Kia positioned it as an all-new hybrid that was just reaching dealer lots, and the appeal was broader than fuel economy alone. Its crossover-like styling gives it a different look from the wedge-shaped hybrid image many buyers expect, and the overall package was aimed at people who wanted comfort and practicality along with efficiency.
That balance is the Niro’s main strength. The summary highlights a comfortable interior and a spacious rear seat, along with a promise of up to 50 mpg combined. At the same time, Kia’s effort to give the Niro mass appeal came with compromises on fuel economy and practicality, so it was not presented as an outright leader against some better-known rivals.

I have owned a Niro since 2020, and they are definitely a good investment. Though it costs a little more to purchase due to being a hybrid, you more than compensate with smooth ride and excellent gas mileage.

The kia niro looks to be a suv. But its a compact SUV with very little backseat room..its too small unless youre looking for a compact suv. Didnt like the roadnoise on our test drive

How much does the 2017 Kia Niro cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,464 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,068 |
| Year-Round High | $11,602 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,644 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.55% |
Prices have softened 1.55% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 116 listings available, which suggests you have a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Kia Niro earns a 4/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology.
Kia aimed this hybrid at you if you want comfort and practicality along with efficiency, and the overview emphasizes a comfortable interior, a spacious rear seat, and up to 50 mpg combined. The expert review also points to a quiet highway ride, well-placed controls, and a crossover-like shape that helps it feel less like a conventional hybrid compromise.
The market shows 34.5% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview and expert review both frame the Niro as a comfort- and efficiency-focused hybrid with a well-assembled cabin and a smooth, predictable driving character. Its hybrid system is described as working without much shudder when the gasoline engine kicks in, and the regenerative braking is presented as more predictable than what you may find in other hybrids.
Kia’s telematics system can also help you stay on top of scheduled maintenance, which is a useful ownership perk for keeping the car in good shape over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a hybrid crossover with this kind of feature set can become more expensive to keep satisfying if prior maintenance was skipped or the battery-related components were neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Niro?
At 64.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the cabin and controls show wear that matches the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level FE and midrange LX and EX trims are not as lavishly appointed, while Touring adds leather seats and a quieter-feeling cabin; the FE also misses the standard blind-spot and rear cross-traffic setup found on EX and Touring.
- Powertrain: The Niro pairs a 104-hp, 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a 43-hp electric motor and a 1.56kWh lithium-ion polymer battery through a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and the review notes brisk initial acceleration with smooth handoff between power sources.
- Safety package: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, while automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring but not available on the FE.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard even on the FE, paired with a standard 7-inch touchscreen; Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer.
- Fuel efficiency: The overview cites up to 50 mpg combined, and the cost-effectiveness discussion says the Niro’s extra 7 mpg can take a long time to offset its higher purchase price versus a conventional crossover.
Which 2017 Kia Niro trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Niro is offered in 4 trim levels: FE, LX, EX, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- FE: This is the simplest way into the Niro, and it still gives you Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Uvo, but it skips the standard blind-spot and rear cross-traffic features found higher up the range.
- LX: This trim adds pushbutton start with a smart key, making it a sensible step up if you want a little more convenience without moving too far up the price ladder.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats and outside mirrors, plus standard blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale Niro experience, with leather seats, an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer.
Safety-package note: blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Niro?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 116 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.55% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,068, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Niro's resale value?
The current average of $11,464 sits slightly below last year's $11,644.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy in at a lower entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained than on broad market momentum alone.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro safe?
The 2017 Kia Niro has not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, while automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring but not available on the FE. That means you should pay close attention to trim level if safety tech matters to you.
The main caveat is that the most popular active safety features do not come standard across the lineup, so a lower trim can leave you with a much thinner safety package than you might expect.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Niro or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 model is positioned as an all-new hybrid that emphasizes comfort, practicality, and crossover-like styling while still promising up to 50 mpg combined.
The bottom line: If you want the earliest version of the Niro and you value comfort, practicality, and efficiency, the 2017 is a reasonable place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples and be selective about trim, since the safety and convenience equipment varies a lot by version.
