Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Niro stands out as a hybrid that aims to be more than a fuel-sipping commuter. Kia designed it for buyers who want comfort and practicality without giving up the efficiency benefits of a hybrid, and its crossover-like styling helps it feel less conventional than the typical wedge-shaped hybrid image. The overall impression is that the Niro’s parts add up to something stronger than the sum of its individual specs.
What makes it appealing is the balance it strikes. The Niro offers a comfortable interior and a spacious rear seat, and Kia’s estimate of up to 50 mpg combined adds to its appeal for shoppers focused on efficiency. At the same time, the car is not without compromises: Kia made some tradeoffs in fuel economy and practicality in pursuit of broader appeal, and the Niro is described as unable to compete on an even playing field against some better-known rivals.

I have owned a Niro since 2020, and they are definitely a good investment. Though it costs a little more to purchase due to being a hybrid, you more than compensate with smooth ride and excellent gas mileage.

How much does the 2017 Kia Niro cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,967 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,060 |
| Year-Round High | $11,390 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,884 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.76% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 114 listings available, which gives you a modest pool of choices to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Kia Niro earns a 4/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology.
That lines up with Kia’s pitch for this hybrid: you get a comfortable interior, a spacious rear seat, and crossover-like styling rather than the usual hybrid wedge shape. The expert review also points to a well-assembled cabin, easy-to-use controls, and a quiet highway experience in Touring trim.
The Niro’s appeal is strongest if you want a comfortable, practical hybrid with strong efficiency and everyday usability, but it does make some tradeoffs in fuel economy and practicality versus some better-known rivals. 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Niro is described as a hybrid that balances comfort and practicality, and the expert review highlights smooth, predictable brake feel, a quiet transmission, and a powertrain that avoids the shuddering or awkward transitions some hybrids can have. Kia’s Uvo system can also tell you when scheduled maintenance is due and help you set up an appointment, which is a useful ownership perk.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the hybrid system, brakes, and overall condition have been maintained properly, since a neglected example can erase the efficiency and refinement that make the Niro appealing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Niro?
At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple trims or higher-mileage examples. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the hybrid and safety equipment work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level FE and midrange LX and EX trims are not as lavishly appointed, while Touring trim adds leather seats and a more upscale feel. The base trim also misses some of the convenience and safety equipment found higher up the range.
- Powertrain: The Niro pairs a 104-hp 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a 43-hp electric motor and a 1.56kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, routed through a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The setup is tuned for smooth, efficient everyday driving rather than quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX. Automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring, but not available at all on the FE.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a standard 7-inch touchscreen and Uvo telematics. Touring trim upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer.
- Fuel efficiency: Kia’s estimate of up to 50 mpg combined is a major draw, and the review also notes that the Niro’s efficiency is part of its appeal even if it makes some tradeoffs elsewhere.
Which 2017 Kia Niro trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Niro is offered in 4 trim levels: FE, LX, EX, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- FE: This is the simplest way into the Niro, and it still gives you Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Uvo. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the hybrid without needing extra convenience or safety features.
- LX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds pushbutton start with a smart key while keeping the core tech and efficiency story intact. If you want a balanced used Niro without stretching to the pricier trims, this is the one to focus on.
- EX: This trim adds heated front seats and outside mirrors, plus blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. It’s the better pick if you want more comfort and a stronger safety feature set.
- Touring: This is the most upscale version, with leather seats, an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and a premium 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer. Choose it if you want the most comfort and equipment, but it’s not the value leader.
Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Niro?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 114 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,060, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Niro's resale value?
The current average of $10,967 sits slightly above last year's $10,884.
That kind of stability suggests the Niro has held its value reasonably well for a used hybrid, especially given its practical appeal and efficiency focus. For a future seller, a steady price trend can be a good sign that the market still recognizes the model’s strengths rather than discounting it heavily.
Because the Niro’s pricing has remained consistent, a well-kept example should be easier to position competitively when you decide to sell. Strong condition and a clean history matter even more when the market is stable, since buyers can compare your car against plenty of similar listings.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Niro safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Niro has lots of tech for entertainment, but the most popular active safety features do not come standard. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the EX and Touring, but not available on the FE or LX. Automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and smart cruise control are optional on the LX, EX, and Touring, but not available at all on the FE.
A key caveat is that the Niro had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA in the source material, so you should lean more heavily on its available driver-assistance equipment and the condition of any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Niro or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Niro is positioned as a comfortable, practical hybrid with up to 50 mpg combined and a spacious rear seat, but it also makes some compromises in fuel economy and practicality in pursuit of broader appeal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a sensible choice if you want a used Niro with stable pricing, decent inventory, and a strong efficiency-and-comfort balance. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, focus on the better-priced listings and prioritize condition and history over trim level. If you want more features, a later model year may be worth considering, but the 2017 still makes sense as a practical, value-oriented pick.
