Overview

Taking some styling cues from its popular Optima sedan, the Korean automaker Kia has refreshed its 2017 Forte5 with a new grille, redesigned headlights and taillights, and additional trim-specific standard features. This affordable 5-passenger 5-door compact hatchback remains a solid daily driver, again available in 3 trims: the base LX, the midlevel EX, and the sport-oriented SX.
For the 2017 model year, the Forte5 gets a new “tiger nose” grille, a swoopier headlight design, and refreshed taillights, while higher trims add standard LED running lights. The base LX is now eligible for available safety technology like blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a rear cross-traffic alert. The EX gains some new additions to its list of standard features, including leather upholstery, heated front seats, push-button start via Smart Key, and perimeter approach lighting, and the SX includes a new Orange Color Pack featuring unique upholstery inserts with contrast stitching. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also be available on the EX and SX.
Powering the Forte5 LX and EX is a new 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) powerplant, which replaces the 1.8-liter I4 currently standard in the lower trims. The 2.0-liter will mate to either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an available upgraded 6-speed shiftable automatic for 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. Expect better mileage than the current I4's 24 mpg city/34 highway/28 combined (with the automatic).
The Forte5 SX will pack a turbocharged 1.6-liter I4 that’s good for 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque under the management of either a standard 6-speed manual or a brand new optional 7-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Look once again for mileage estimates close to the current edition’s 21/29/24. All Forte5's come only with front-wheel drive (FWD).
Returning features on the 2017 Forte5 include alloy wheels, heated power-adjustable mirrors, adjustable-effort power steering, full power accessories, and telescoping tilt-wheel steering. Higher trims are slated to carry cruise control, a rear-view camera, a cooled storage bin, Bluetooth hands-free calling capability, and a single CD/MP3 player with 4 speakers, satellite radio, and an auxiliary audio input.
Options include a power sunroof, GPS navigation, HD Radio, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory for driver settings, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Kia claims 23.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind rear seats, though those seats can also be folded for significantly more space when needed.
Standard safety equipment aboard the 2017 Forte5 includes 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front side-mounted airbags, front and rear head curtain airbags, front fog/driving lights, and turn-signal-integrated mirrors. As noted above, all 2017 Forte5 trims now have optional blind-spot warning, lane-departure alert, and rear cross-traffic monitoring.
The 2017 Forte5 should hit dealer showrooms in the summer of 2016, competing with the Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback, Volkswagen Golf Hatchback and Jetta Sportwagen, and Mazda MAZDA3 Hatchback.

I love this car! Very similar to a Mazda 3, but better for folks who need a bit more of a sturdy car as opposed to a zippy one!

This car had everything we were looking for. Considering the current market, we got it for a great price. So far it seems solid.. the interior is in great shape and is well designed, it rides and handles nicely. We were looking for a decent hatchback and this fits exactly.

How much does the 2017 Kia Forte5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,357 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,651.27 |
| Year-Round High | $10,797.70 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,240 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.14% |
Prices are up 1.14% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 118 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $9,651.27, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Kia Forte5 a good car?
Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating suggests you should feel reasonably confident if the car fits your needs and budget.
That kind of score points to broad owner satisfaction, which matters when you're trying to balance value, practicality, and everyday livability.
With 26.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively without waiting for a perfect market.
Is the 2017 Kia Forte5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
For used buyers, that suggests the bigger ownership risk is less about broad dissatisfaction and more about finding a specific car with clean maintenance and condition history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Forte5?
At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and signs of uneven wear so you can separate a good deal from a car with hidden costs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Forte5?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer's market.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 118 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.14% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,651.27, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Forte5's resale value?
The current average of $10,357 sits slightly above last year's $10,240.
That modest increase suggests the market has held up fairly well, which can help support resale confidence if you buy at the right price. If you keep the car in strong condition and avoid overpaying up front, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation pain later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Forte5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.14% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a balanced mix of price, availability, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a sensible primary target. If you're especially price-sensitive, keep watching for listings near the low end of the range and be ready to move quickly when a clean example appears.
