CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 4,305 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,494.00, 31.6% of 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.77 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
61.6% of 2017 Grand Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out because its lineup is broad enough to cover both luxury and the rugged capability Jeep is known for. It is also described as Jeep’s on-road/off-road range-topping vehicle, which helps explain why it has such a strong identity in the brand’s lineup. The expert impression is that it carries a personality and charm beyond the usual upscale comparison points, and the Trailhawk is singled out as a clear example of that character.
That mix of strengths makes the 2017 Grand Cherokee appealing to buyers who want a vehicle that can feel refined without giving up Jeep’s off-road reputation. Owners echo that appeal by praising its comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capability. The main drawbacks noted are gas mileage and some concerns about interior material quality, so it is not the best choice for shoppers who prioritize efficiency or the most premium cabin finish above all else.

I am currently buying my second Grand Cherokee, it’s a fantastic vehicle! Only sold my first one because I moved to Chicago and had no need for a vehicle. It drives great, very quiet road noise, and super comfortable. Both of my GC’s are the Altitude trim and the suede and leather combo is so nice. I also love the infotainment system, great layout, simple and everything is sturdy. Nothing feels cheap in this vehicle!

| Year-Round High | $15,948.78 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,948 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.78% |
Prices have softened 8.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 4,385 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,552.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 4.77/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.5/10. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capability. That lines up well with the Grand Cherokee’s role as a broad-appeal SUV that can feel refined while still fitting Jeep’s rugged identity.
For you, that means this model year makes the most sense if you want a midsize SUV that can cover daily driving, family use, and more demanding trips without losing character. The market also shows 27.7% good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable in the ways that matter most to used buyers: comfortable ride quality, strong performance, and towing ability that owners trust over time. The expert impression reinforces that this is a well-rounded SUV with real capability, not just image.
The expert notes also emphasize its value and capability mix, which suggests you’re buying into a model with a strong reputation for doing a lot of jobs well. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure prior use and maintenance history are clean, especially given the model’s complexity and range of equipment.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-trim or more heavily optioned examples. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT performance trims, and Trailhawk. The Laredo is the base trim and comes with fog lights, halogen quad headlights, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic temperature control, a USB port, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. Higher trims add leather seating, heated seats, a panoramic moonroof, larger wheels, and upgraded audio and infotainment, while the Trailhawk stands apart with all-terrain tires, skid plates, a matte black hood, red tow hooks, and off-road-focused hardware.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 293 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. You can also get a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 360 horsepower or a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is available, along with multiple 4-wheel-drive systems, including a base setup that lacks four-low.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist. Available driver aids include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.
- Infotainment: The base Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen comes on the Laredo and Limited, while the Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit get the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen. The system includes Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, and higher trims add premium audio systems.
- Fuel efficiency: Some owners note gas mileage as a drawback, and the model is positioned as a capability-first SUV rather than an efficiency leader.
Which 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 7 trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT performance trims, Trailhawk.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials without much luxury. It makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee’s core shape, capability, and standard equipment at the lowest starting price.
- Altitude: This trim adds a more distinctive appearance and sits as a step up from the base model without jumping all the way into luxury territory. It’s a good fit if you want a little more style while staying relatively value-conscious.
- Limited: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and second-row seats, and the larger Uconnect screen on the trims that use it. If you want the sweet spot between price and comfort, this is the one to focus on.
- Trailhawk: This is the clear choice if you want the most off-road-focused version. It adds all-terrain tires, skid plates, a matte black hood, red tow hooks, Quadra-Drive II, air suspension tuned for articulation, and Selec-Speed control, making it the most specialized trim in the lineup.
- Overland: This trim leans into luxury with LED fog lights, a dual-pane panoramic moonroof, 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, perforated Nappa leather, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect screen. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver.
- Summit: This is the most luxury-focused trim in the lineup, with headlight washers, unique 20-inch wheels, chrome inserts, LED fog lamps, an exclusive fascia design, and the upgraded Harman Kardon audio system. Choose it if cabin polish matters most.
- SRT performance trims: This is the performance-oriented choice in the lineup, aimed at buyers who want the Grand Cherokee’s strongest on-road personality.
The safety content also notes that the Grand Cherokee can be equipped with forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking, so it’s worth checking which of those features are included on the exact trim you’re considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

- Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,385 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,552.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $14,549 sits slightly below last year's $15,948.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
The Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a five-star overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also earns a best score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in moderate overlap front, side, rear, and roof-strength crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert view highlights the Grand Cherokee’s broad lineup and standout Trailhawk character.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,375, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,549 average.
- It appeals to buyers who want broad capability, towing strength, and Jeep styling.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall shopping case, the 2017 is the better target because it combines a lower current average price with strong owner satisfaction and broad trim choice. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path, but you should expect to give up some of the 2017’s market appeal.
