CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
overall

Summary
With 367 currently listed for sale near Toledo, OH and an average price of $14,237, 25.1% of 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokees for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.77 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
56.7% of 2017 Grand Cherokee models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out for trying to cover two very different roles at once. Jeep’s own description of the lineup says it is broad enough to encompass luxury as well as the rugged capabilities the brand is known for, and the Grand Cherokee is presented as the on-road/off-road range-topping vehicle in Jeep’s lineup. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want an SUV that can feel upscale without giving up the brand’s off-road identity.
It also carries a personality that goes beyond the comparison Jeep management once used to describe it. The source notes that the Grand Cherokee has charm beyond English sensibilities, and points to the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk as proof of that character. In owner feedback, the 2017 model is praised for its comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capabilities, which reinforces its broad appeal.
There are tradeoffs, though. Some reviewers mention concerns about gas mileage and the quality of interior materials, and a few felt those details did not fully match the vehicle’s price range. Even so, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee remains distinctive because it blends comfort, capability, and a more premium feel in a way that few SUVs try to balance.

I am currently buying my second Grand Cherokee, it’s a fantastic vehicle! Only sold my first one because I moved to Chicago and had no need for a vehicle. It drives great, very quiet road noise, and super comfortable. Both of my GC’s are the Altitude trim and the suede and leather combo is so nice. I also love the infotainment system, great layout, simple and everything is sturdy. Nothing feels cheap in this vehicle!

How much does the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,507 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,500.24 |
| Year-Round High | $15,912.11 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,915 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.85% |
Prices have softened 8.85% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,417 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare against. If you find a listing below $14,500.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?
Yes — with a 4.77/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee lands as a strong all-around pick. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, luxury features, performance, safety, and towing capability. That lines up well with the model’s broad mission in the overview: you get a vehicle that can feel refined while still carrying Jeep’s rugged identity. The market also shows 30.7% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.77/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence, especially when you value comfort, capability, and towing over simplicity.
The expert impression reinforces that sense of durability and all-around competence, especially in the way the Grand Cherokee balances upscale comfort with Jeep’s off-road hardware. The cost-effectiveness notes also help, since the model’s value proposition is tied to getting a lot of capability for the money.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a more complex, capability-focused SUV can bring higher repair and upkeep exposure than a simpler crossover.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the equipment level matches the trim being advertised. Because this model spans comfort, luxury, and off-road use, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Laredo is the base trim and comes with fog lights, halogen quad headlights, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic temperature control, a USB port, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Limited adds leather seating, power-adjustable front seats, heated front and second-row seats, 18-inch polished wheels, and a body-colored front fascia with bright insert. The Overland adds LED fog lights, automatic high beams, a dual-pane panoramic moonroof, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, rain-sensing wipers, perforated Nappa leather, and the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. The Summit adds headlight washers, unique 20-inch wheels, chrome inserts, LED fog lamps, and an exclusive fascia design. The Trailhawk stands apart with 18-inch wheels on all-terrain tires, skid plates, a matte black hood, and red tow hooks.
- Powertrain: The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 293 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. You can also get a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 360 horsepower or a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Multiple 4-wheel-drive systems are available, and the Trailhawk gets Quadra-Drive II with a two-speed transfer case and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist. Available features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking. Some features are not standard on every trim, so verify the exact equipment on the vehicle you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The base setup is the Uconnect 5.0 touchscreen on the Laredo and Limited. It includes climate controls, stereo menus, settings, and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. The Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit get the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen. The system is easy to use and supports complex voice commands.
- Fuel efficiency: Some owners mention gas mileage as a drawback, so efficiency should be part of your shopping checklist.
Which 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 7 trim levels: Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, Trailhawk, and SRT.
Here's the short version:
- Laredo: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Grand Cherokee experience at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you want the nameplate, the standard equipment, and the broad capability without paying for luxury extras.
- Altitude: This trim sits above the base model and is a good fit if you want a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the luxury-focused trims.
- Limited: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds leather seating, heated front and second-row seats, and power-adjustable front seats while staying below the upper luxury trims.
- Overland: Choose this if you want a more premium cabin, the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, a panoramic moonroof, and stronger upscale appeal.
- Summit: This is the luxury-first choice, with the most premium audio and the most distinctive exterior touches in the lineup.
- Trailhawk: Pick this if off-road capability matters most. It brings the most trail-focused hardware, including all-terrain tires, skid plates, red tow hooks, Quadra-Drive II, and air suspension tuned for articulation.
- SRT: This is the performance-oriented trim for buyers who want the most aggressive character in the lineup.
The safety package includes standard airbags, stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist, with additional driver-assistance features available on higher trims.

- Clean inventory: 61.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,500.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $14,507 sits slightly below last year's $15,915.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim in strong condition. The broad appeal of the Grand Cherokee also helps support demand across the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?
The Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 5-star Overall crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also earns a best score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in moderate overlap front, side, rear, and roof-strength crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, a reversing camera, and rear park assist. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and self-parking.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The Trailhawk stands out this year with its trail-ready hardware, including Quadra-Drive II, air suspension, and Selec-Speed control.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,335, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,507 average.
- It appeals to buyers who want broad capability, towing strength, and Jeep styling.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better choice if you want the strongest mix of comfort, capability, and market availability. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value-oriented alternative, but you give up some of the 2017’s current-market advantages.
