How much does the 2017 Jeep Compass cost?

Prices have softened 3.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,274 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 Jeep Compass a good car?

The 2017 Jeep Compass is a qualified pick if you want a compact crossover that leans into comfort and off-road ability rather than pure on-road polish. It earns a user rating of 3.67/5 and an expert rating of 7.17/10.

The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Performance.

The Compass is described as a compact crossover that fills the space between the smaller Renegade and larger Cherokee, and it is aimed at buyers who want something more trail-capable than the typical small crossover. The expert evaluation also notes that the Trailhawk trim is the version that really unlocks the Compass’s more adventurous side, while the rest of the lineup is more about everyday usability.

With 31.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Jeep Compass reliable?

The 2017 Jeep Compass is presented as a newer take on the nameplate that improves on the old Compass while aiming to deliver more capability and a more polished cabin. The expert evaluation also says the new Compass is the right fit for a certain kind of buyer, which suggests its strengths are specific rather than universal.

The performance notes point to a 9-speed automatic that can feel reluctant to downshift at speed, which may affect how confident the Compass feels in passing and merging. On the other hand, the same evaluation says the Compass is otherwise enjoyable to drive, quieter than a new Honda CR-V in one comparison, and comfortable on long highway cruises.

The dependability takeaway for used buyers is that you should prioritize a careful test drive and service-history review, because the drivetrain behavior can shape long-term ownership satisfaction.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Compass?

At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful here because you want to separate clean examples from vehicles that may have been repaired after a collision. Pay close attention to how the Compass drives, too, since the transmission behavior and overall condition matter a lot in a used example.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is described as nicely put together, with big buttons and easy-to-read screens, but the setup also has some ergonomic annoyances and limited cargo space. The Trailhawk stands apart as the more capable version, while the base setup is more about everyday comfort than rugged hardware.
• Powertrain: The Compass uses a 9-speed automatic, and the AWD system offers Auto, Snow, Sport, and Sand/Mud modes. The Trailhawk adds Active Drive Low, a 20:1 crawl ratio, hill-descent control, and a Rock setting for tougher terrain.
• Safety package: Buyers can choose from active safety systems including lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection, and forward-collision warning. The content does not indicate that every trim gets the same full set.
• Infotainment: The 7-inch touchscreen adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the 8.4-inch screen adds factory navigation. Uconnect is described as faster and more responsive than the previous version.
• Fuel efficiency: The Compass is described as capable of about 22 mpg city, 31 highway, and 25 combined.

Which 2017 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?

The 2017 Jeep Compass is offered in 2 trim levels: Sport and Trailhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the more affordable path if you want the Compass’s basic crossover packaging and everyday usability. It makes the most sense if you care more about value and comfort than the extra off-road hardware.
• Trailhawk: This is the best-value trim if you want the Compass’s real personality. It adds Active Drive Low, a 20:1 crawl ratio, hill-descent control, Rock mode, skid plates, tow hooks, and better approach, departure, and breakover angles.

The safety content also notes that buyers can choose from active safety systems including lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection, and forward-collision warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Jeep Compass?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,274 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.99% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,152, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Jeep Compass's resale value?

The current average of $11,268 sits slightly below last year's $11,736.

That softer pricing suggests the Compass has already moved down from its prior level, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, especially if you own a more desirable version.

Because the market has eased, a clean, well-equipped example should hold up better than a rough one. If you buy carefully now, you may be able to limit depreciation pressure later by choosing a trim and condition level that other shoppers still want.

Is the 2017 Jeep Compass safe?

The 2017 Jeep Compass has not been crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, so there is no direct new-model crash-test result to cite here.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Buyers can choose from active safety systems including lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection, and forward-collision warning. Those features help the Compass compete, but the lack of published crash-test results means you should place extra weight on equipment level and overall condition when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.99% compared with last year.
• If you want a compact crossover with legitimate off-road capability and a Trailhawk-focused personality.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $7,939, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,268 average.
• It offers value-oriented pricing with a lower entry point and possible incentives.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $13,268, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $11,268 average.
• It adds a newer-generation feel with more versatility and stronger off-road appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and capability, the 2017 is the one to target, especially in Trailhawk form. If your priority is lower purchase cost, the 2016 is the budget-friendly path; if you want a newer-feeling Compass and can spend more, the 2018 is the upgrade route.
