2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid test drive
overall
A no-nonsense hybrid hatchback from Hyundai stands out for its specs, not its looks.
Hyundai must be playing the long game with the all-new Ioniq. After all, unless it's preparing for gas to hit $4 a gallon again, why else would a carmaker release a compact hybrid hatchback when Americans are ignoring small, fuel-efficient cars in favor of crossovers and SUVs?
If gas prices do spike again, the Ioniq Hybrid will already be on dealer lots, awaiting buyers attracted by a promise of 55 mpg. An all-electric model is also available if you live in California, and a plug-in hybrid will hit dealerships later this year.
But fuel economy isn’t the Ioniq’s only selling point. Compared to the segment-leading Toyota Prius, the Hyundai looks and feels familiar—which should appeal to the sort of buyer who wants an efficient hatchback, but doesn’t like the Prius’ futuristic styling.

Love this car. The moment we sat in it we loved how it drove. The interior is very nice for the cost and has Apple car play, blind spot indicator and great mileage. We drove it right away on a 2.5 hr trip and it was pretty comfortable. Definitely recommend this if you’re moving to a hybrid

Great little car! Smooth handling, great entertainment system with Apple/Android play. Very roomy, even in back. I wish it came with a trunk cover. Also, as many reviewers said, you have to start braking at an earlier distance.

Car layout is familiar to my Sonata and enjoyable. Rear window view is slightly obscured by a divider, similar to other hatchbacks with sloping rear window. If that wasnt the situation, Id rate it 5/5 stars.

Is the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5. The expert rating is 7.3/10, and the model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Technology. The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is positioned as a compact, fuel-efficient hatchback for you if you want efficiency without futuristic styling, and its familiar design and straightforward cabin make it easier to live with than some rivals. Its biggest draw is fuel economy, with Hyundai citing 55 mpg, and it’s best suited to shoppers who value practicality and straightforward design over flash. Good and great deals account for 27.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Hyundai backs the Ioniq with a 10-year powertrain warranty and a lifetime hybrid battery warranty, which adds peace of mind for used buyers. The car’s conventional layout and comfortable, predictable driving character also support the sense that it’s built for easy ownership rather than novelty. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the hybrid system, brakes, and overall condition have been maintained properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid?
At 72.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important. You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks bodywork, hybrid components, and brake feel. Focus on overall condition and equipment level, since the trim you choose can change both comfort and safety content.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The entry-level Blue gives you dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, and satellite radio, but active safety isn’t available at all on that trim. The SEL adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the Limited adds leather seats and more upscale equipment.
- Powertrain: The Ioniq uses a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission rather than the more common hybrid eCVT setup, which helps it feel more responsive. It can hesitate slightly when you accelerate from a stop, so a test drive should include low-speed pullaways and highway merging.
- Safety package: Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they cost extra. On the SEL, active safety can be added with the Tech Package; on the Limited, it’s bundled into the Ultimate Package. The Blue does not offer active safety.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all trims. The Limited adds an Infinity sound system and BlueLink telematics, which lets you check on and remotely start the car from your smartphone or smartwatch.
- Fuel efficiency: Hyundai says the Blue returns 57 mpg city and 59 mpg highway, while the SEL and Limited are rated at 55 mpg city and 54 mpg highway. The car’s real-world efficiency is still strong, but it may not match the window-sticker estimate exactly.
Which 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid is offered in 3 trim levels: Blue, SEL, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Blue: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and the best fuel economy ratings. You get dual-zone climate control, a proximity key, satellite radio, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you give up the active safety features that are available on higher trims.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim. It adds heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, a 7-inch LCD display in the gauge cluster, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and it can be equipped with the Tech Package for active safety features. If you want the best balance of price, comfort, and available safety tech, this is the trim to target.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice. It adds leather seats, an Infinity sound system, and BlueLink telematics, and it can be bundled with the Ultimate Package for active safety. It makes sense if you want the most comfort and convenience features, but it costs more and the safety package is bundled rather than standalone.
On safety, active safety features are optional on the SEL and Limited, and they are not available on the Blue.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and wait for the right car.
- Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 79 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 72.2% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid safe?
It has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Ioniq does come standard with a reversing camera, stability control, and seven airbags. Lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and smart cruise control are available, but they cost extra, and the Blue trim does not offer active safety at all. If safety matters to you, the SEL with the Tech Package is the trim to focus on, while the Limited requires the more expensive Ultimate Package to get those features.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Hyundai says the Ioniq Hybrid offers 55 mpg, and the car’s appeal is rooted in efficiency and straightforward design rather than flash.
The bottom line: If you want a conventional-looking hybrid hatchback with strong fuel economy and standard smartphone integration, the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid is a sensible buy. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, focus on the SEL for the best mix of value and equipment; if you want the lowest entry price, the Blue is the cheaper path, but you’ll give up the available safety tech.
