There are 239 listings available, which gives you a modest pool of trucks to compare.

Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the 2017 Sierra 3500HD’s appeal comes from its heavy-duty capability, more refined interior, and broad range of cab, bed, axle, and trim combinations. It was built to handle hauling and towing first, but it also offers enough polish and configuration flexibility to fit everyday use better than a bare-bones work truck.

The market also shows 27.6% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 Sierra 3500HD was part of a generation that had accumulated a notable number of recalls, so used buyers should pay close attention to service history and confirm that any open issues were addressed. If you want to reduce long-term ownership risk, focus on trucks with clean documentation and a careful pre-purchase inspection.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report and prioritize any signs of prior collision repair, frame damage, or inconsistent maintenance records. A thorough inspection should focus on overall condition, especially because this is a heavy-duty truck that may have been used for demanding work. Pay close attention to wear that could hint at hard towing or hauling use.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile opportunities.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 239 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.70% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $37,830, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?

The current average of $37,876 sits slightly below last year's $42,413.

That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face more price pressure than in the prior year. If you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition, you can help protect value, especially in a segment where capability and maintenance history matter a lot. Trucks with clean records and desirable configurations tend to draw more interest when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong pick if you want a heavy-duty truck with serious capability, a more refined cabin, and a market that currently gives you some negotiating room. If your priority is simply finding the lowest entry price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as a balanced choice for shoppers who want capability and comfort together.
