Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD a good car?

Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the 2017 Sierra 3500HD backs that up with a heavy-duty focus that still adds refinement. The overview points to a truck built around serious towing and hauling capability, while also offering a revamped interior, smarter materials, and a more modern infotainment setup than before. It also gives you a wide range of cab, bed, axle, and trim combinations, so you can tailor it to hauling, towing, or everyday use. 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview also notes that this generation had accumulated a notable number of recalls, so you should treat a used purchase as one that deserves careful verification. Even with its strong capability and upscale-leaning cabin, the safest path is to confirm the truck’s service history and make sure any recall work has been addressed before you commit. For used buyers, that means reliability risk is less about the truck’s core mission and more about how well a specific example has been maintained and repaired.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

At 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from trucks with accident or title issues. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, frame, suspension, and any signs of heavy-duty wear, since this model year is built for demanding work. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, because a well-kept truck is likely to be a better long-term buy than one that simply looks clean on the surface.

What is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?

The current average of $38,525 sits slightly below last year's $41,822.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you a better entry point now, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition, you should be in a better position to preserve value when it comes time to sell. Heavy-duty trucks with broad appeal and strong capability tend to hold buyer interest when they’re presented well and maintained carefully.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.88% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want a heavy-duty truck with strong capability, a more refined cabin, and a market that currently gives you some negotiating room. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as a balanced choice when you want work-truck strength without giving up too much comfort.
