Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD a good car?

Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year.

The 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD stands out as a heavy-duty truck that still leans hard into work-truck capability while offering enough refinement to feel more upscale than its roots suggest. It was also available in a wide range of cab, bed, axle, and trim combinations, which makes it easier for you to tailor the truck to hauling, towing, or everyday use. For shoppers who want a one-ton pickup that can work hard without feeling stripped down, that mix of capability and flexibility is a real advantage.

With 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 Sierra 3500HD was part of a generation that had accumulated a notable number of recalls, so you should treat maintenance history and recall completion as important parts of your evaluation. Its heavy-duty design and strong capability are appealing, but used buyers should be especially careful about verifying that the truck has been properly maintained and inspected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history before you get too far into the purchase. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s condition, especially signs of hard use, since heavy-duty trucks are often worked harder than average vehicles. Focus on overall wear, evidence of towing or hauling stress, and whether the truck’s condition matches the seller’s description.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 240 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 72.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $37,803, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?

The current average of $38,368 sits slightly below last year's $42,262.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the truck in strong condition so you preserve as much value as possible. Because this model year still has broad appeal among heavy-duty shoppers, a clean, well-kept example should remain easier to move than one with visible wear or a questionable history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

The bottom line:

If you want a heavy-duty truck with strong capability, a more refined cabin than older work trucks, and a market that currently favors careful shoppers, the 2017 is a solid primary choice. If your top priority is stretching your budget, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than locking onto this one year alone.
