The OnStar Basic Plan is included for the first 5 years of ownership, which adds some ownership convenience.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some owners report pricing concerns and limited cab storage, so condition and maintenance history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing or hauling use in its past. Focus on body condition, brake wear, and signs of hard use, since this model is often bought for work. If you’re considering a higher-trim truck, make sure the added equipment is functioning as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Denali adds a chrome mesh grille, 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome side-step rails, a spray-in bedliner, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, a Bose premium sound system, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation. It also includes forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, while the base truck lacks several of those upscale and safety features.
• Powertrain: You can choose a gasoline V6 or a turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder. The V6 makes 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.8-liter diesel makes 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and can improve combined fuel economy by 4 mpg.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, while Denali models add forward collision warning and lane-departure warning. The truck does not offer blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, or automatic emergency braking.
• Infotainment: IntelliLink uses an 8-inch screen on Denali, with a responsive touchscreen, logical menus, and smartphone projection capability. The system also supports Siri Eyes Free and keeps primary radio and climate controls separate from the screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 19 mpg in combined driving, and the diesel improves combined fuel economy by 4 mpg.

Which 2017 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 693 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.29% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,802, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $20,044 sits slightly below last year's $20,726.

That decline suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also temper near-term resale upside. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend means you should be realistic about appreciation and focus on buying a clean, well-kept example. Trucks with strong demand and solid owner satisfaction tend to hold attention better over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2017 GMC Canyon earns a four-star overall crash test rating from NHTSA, mainly due to its three-star rollover resistance score.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon includes a reversing camera as standard equipment, while Denali models add forward collision warning and lane-departure warning. It also includes Teen Driver technology and a Rear Seat Reminder system, both of which are useful family-oriented features. OnStar automatic collision notification can help after an accident.

A key shortcoming is the lack of blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking, which are important omissions for a truck in this class.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.29% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says it tackles the most weight in the smallest package, which makes it especially appealing if towing and hauling matter.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,589, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,044 average.
• It was a refreshed midsize truck in a revived segment, giving you a smaller domestic pickup option.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of capability, owner satisfaction, and current market softness, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still gives you the Canyon’s core midsize-truck appeal.
